Jefferson Student Earns Brookhaven Lab Red Ribbon

Could she be a future Nobel Prize Award winner? Anything is possible. Jefferson Primary School second grader Katerina Damiano earned a red ribbon in the Brookhaven National Laboratory's elementary science fair.

The intellectually curious youngster is a student in Jefferson teacher Karen Mallow-Rizzo's class. This year's Brookhaven fair drew entries from more than 100 schools and 500 students ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Ms. Damiano's project focused on e-waste. Typical fair entries include charts, experiments, demos, diagrams and collections with a scientific objective. Brookhaven National Laboratory scientists and elementary school teachers serve as contest judges.

Ms. Damiano was accompanied to the Saturday fair by her parents. Ms. Mallow-Rizzo and Jefferson School Principal Valerie-Capitulo-Saide were also on hand. Everyone was excited, but no one more than the youngster herself.

"It was a very exciting Saturday," Ms. Capitulo-Saide said.
