Blue Devils Star in
Exceptional Seniors Meet
Six Huntington High School fencers shined in this year's Nassau vs. Suffolk Exceptional Seniors dual meet, which was held at Jack Abrams School in Huntington Station.
The meet pits the top seniors from each of the two Long Island counties in a rigorous battle for bragging rights. "This was the third year of the contest and the first time it included the national technology of instant replay," said Alan Kuver, Huntington's head coach.
Blue Devil seniors Maggie Askerberg (foil) and Carly Glowacky (epee) started for the Suffolk squad and helped lead the team to its third straight victory over Nassau, this time by a 21-6 score.
In the men's competition, Huntington was represented by seniors Brent Filippini (saber) and Joseph Rizzi (foil) and epee specialists James Ferraiolo and Richard Hermer-Fried. The Nassau squad put up a good fight, but with Huntington fencers contributing six wins the Suffolk team was able to edge its opponents to the west, 15-12 and remain undefeated in the senior challenge.
Jack Abrams School is the base of operations for the Huntington fencing team, which practices, competes and stores its equipment at the site.
