Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School Board members approved four probationary teacher appointments during a meeting of the trustees last week. Kristin Heimbach (Latin, 7-12), David Moriarty (Huntington High School math), Melissa Goldsborough (Woodhull, special education) and Ralph Miranda (high school, chemistry/physics) were all named to the district faculty, with probation periods set to run from September 1 to September 1, 2016.

Trustees approved part-time appointments for Alan Kuver (J. Taylor Finley Middle School technology .8), Jaclyn Ambrosio (Finley, family and consumer science .8), Nancy Burke-Allard (K-2/K-6 data coordinator .6), Jessica Castaneda (district-wide, music .4), Nadine Araoz (Southdown, ESL .4), Devin Auricchio (high school, art .3), Kim Valerio (high school, art .4 from approximately September 1 to January 5, 2014) and Karen Morea (high school, art .4 from approximately January 6 to approximately June 30, 2014).

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Appointed Stephen Henry as the physical education/athletics coordinator for 2013/14.

• Appointed Georgia D. McCarthy as the driver education program coordinator for 2013/14.

• Appointed Kenneth Card as the director of the adult education program for 2013/14.

• Appointed Keith Meyers and Allison VonVange as Greenkill trip coordinators for 2013/14.

• Appointed Brian Hansen as curator of the district's Heritage Museum for 2013/14.

• Authorized Marta Smith to perform translation services in 2013/14. She will be paid a stipend of $3,000.

• Approved changes in assignment for custodians Kenneth Cunningham and William Nitzel, effective July 3.

• Accepted the resignation of district security guard Jason Ennis, effective June 11.

• Approved district maintenance mechanic Robert Norton to return from a leave of absence, effective July 1.

• Approved post-season pay for coaches Michael Marinello, Kathleen Wright, Kailene Abt, John Walsh, Charles Maccio, Eli Acosta, Ronald Wilson, Paul McDermott, Julian Watts, Jennifer Fudens, Kevin Thorbourne and Jamie Fishlow.

• Appointed Jose Torres as a custodian assignment to Jack Abrams School.

• Approved Huntington High School students Dixon Doblas, William Harris, Ashley Lopez, Evan Montreuil, Benjamin Whitcher and Lindsey Williams to work as lab assistants during the 2013/14 school year. They will be paid $7.25 per hour.

• Approved Blue Devil marching band summer and fall staff members.

• Approved various special education program related summer staff members.

• Approved nurses Marlene McKenna, Christine Renzulli, Martha Ironman and Katherine Kunze-Khokhar for services related to sports physicals during the 2013/14 school year.

• Approved staff members for the district's summer virtual learning program, including program administrator Rae Montesano and mentors Lauren Baglivi, Suzette Biagi, Kimberly Finneran and Donna Moro.

• Approved 15 teachers spread across grades 1-5 to engage in summer science curriculum writing. Rae Montesano will serve as the project's coordinator. The cost of the project is funded through a school improvement grant.

• Approved Kimberly Schiller, Brendan McGowan, Lauren Amendola and Joseph Leavy to engage in curriculum writing related to ELA grades 7-8.

• Approved LEP/ELL Jump Start summer program staff.

• Authorized 18 teachers to engage in professional development related to Apple iBooks. Costs of the professional development will be covered through a Title IIA grant.

• Authorized teacher Claudia Gonzalez-Butler and Jennifer Marsh to engage in curriculum writing related to Treasures/Treasure Chest program alignment.

• Authorized up to 15 teachers to engage in STEM school training, costs of which will be funded through a school improvement grant.

• Authorized seven teachers to engage in curriculum writing related to ELA Common Core learning standards-writing strand, costs of which will be funded through a school improvement grant.

• Authorized teachers Maria Morello, Kelly Quintero-Lashley, Dianna Molenko and Helen Guarino to engage in curriculum writing related to English 9-12 Common Core state standards.

• Authorized Angela Berner, Eileen Wallace, Veronica Quinlan, Patricia Nowack, Patrice Persichilli, Paula Shivers, Cindy Palmirotto and Patrice Monks to develop a teacher handbook for the elementary digital report card initiative, costs of which are funded through Title IIA and teacher center grants.

• Approved retirement requests submitted by Southdown School monitors Mary Verme and Annie Nolan, effective at the close of business on June 21.

• Authorized Finley special education teacher Carol Emmerman to return from a leave of absence, effective September 1.

• Approved full-time long-term substitute elementary school teacher assignments for Jason Suarez and Nicole Malizia.

• Approved part-time long-term substitute music teacher assignments for Ryan Walter and Jessica Castaneda.

• Appointed Angela Berner the district's ELA coordinator K-6.

• Approved Ronald Wilson to work as a Huntington High School dean.

• Appointed Kathleen McCourt as special education coordinator 9-12.

• Recalled teachers Suzette Biagi (high school, business), Ashley Williams (Woodhull, special education), Louis R. Giani (Flower Hill, physical education), Christine Amodeo (Flower Hill/Washington, librarian) and Natalee Schaeffer (district-wide physical education/health) from the district's preferred eligible list, effective September 1.

• Approved bid awards for art supplies to B&H Photo ($2,875.76), Ceramic Supply ($1,128.80) and Inter-Mares Trading ($288).

• Approved a consultant services contract with All About Kids of Plainview, New York for special education evaluations and services.

• Approved a bid for district computer repair for 2013/14 to NPA Computers in the amount of $55,483.

• Approved bid awards for custodial supplies to Bergo Janitorial Supply, Inc., Central Lewmar/Xpedx, Cleanco Distributors, Emerald Island Supply, Co. Inc., Essential Maintenance Products, I Janvey & Sons, Interboro Packaging Corp., Knight Marketing Corp. of NY, Sterling Sanitary Supply Corp. and WB Mason.

• Approved the addition of the Princeton Review to the list of organizations authorized to use district facilities. It will utilize Huntington High School classrooms for SAT/ACT prep sessions during the 2013/14 school years on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It expects 25-50 students to participate.

• Accepted bid awards through Educational Data Services for audio visual supplies ($2,513.27), elementary science supplies ($78.15), family/consumer science ($922.21), fine art supplies ($32,489.24), general classroom supplies ($72,522.16), health and trainer supplies ($8,108.30), library supplies ($234.75), magazine supplies ($5,720.08), math supplies ($38.17), office/computer supplies ($22,490.65), physical education supplies ($9,503), science supplies ($21,460.54), teaching aids ($99.09) and technology supplies ($5,386.64).

• Approved a contract with the Labor Education & Community Services Agency, Inc. for the district's employee assistance program for 2013/14. The contract cost of $16,150 will be paid for in quarterly installments of $4,037.50.

• Approved a contract with Anderson Center for Autism in Staatsburg, NY for 2013/14. Tuition for the 10 month program is $257.47 per day for 180 days or $46,345 per year. Part I tuition for the 10-month program is $38.17 per day for 180 days or $6,871 per year. Part I tuition for the summer program is also $38.16 per day for 30 days or $1,145. Summer program tuition is $257.47 per day for 30 days or $7,724. The "maintenance" summer program fee is $427.47 per day or 62 days or $26,503.14.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Lorraine Lupinskie of Glen Cove to mentor Huntington School District National Board certification candidates. She will be paid $1,100 per session (equivalent of a six hour day), which includes individual and group meetings.

• Approved a health services agreement for 2012/13 with the Mineola School District in the amount of $640.

• Approved bid awards for interscholastic athletic supplies to Absolute Fencing Gear, Inc. ($1,337), BSN Sports ($4,501.15), Longstretch Sporting Goods ($11.85), MF Athletic Company ($2,133.22), Neff Company ($10,085.87), Olympic Den ($3,485.07), Port Jefferson Sporting Goods ($14,439.59), Riddell ($7,936.56) and South Shore Outdoor Stores ($6,999.50).

• Authorized Superintendent James W. Polansky to attend two conferences, including Network Team Institute APPR/Common Core integration on July 10 in Albany, New York and the New York State School Boards Assn. summer law conference in Melville on July 25.

• Approved an e-rate processing service agreement for 2013/14 with Integra Consulting and Computer Services, Inc. of Bay Shore, NY in the amount of $7,500. The contract is related to the preparation of the district's free and reduced lunch data, completion of forms, student counts, copies of bills for eligible services and limited projects.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Howard Reiser, MD neurological evaluations. He will be paid $250 for each evaluation and report.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Keith Harris, MD for child and adolescent psychiatric evaluations. He will be paid $825 for each evaluation and report.

• Approved a consultant services contract with the Riverhead based Institute for Children with Autism for behavioral consultation, parent training, staff development, transition planning, home services consultation and autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) evaluations. It will be paid $125 per hour for its services and $1,600 for each ADOS evaluation.

• Approved a bid award for auto parts for 2013/14 to Any Part of Huntington. The district will receive 52% off manufacturer's suggested retail price.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Port Jefferson based Avatar Counseling Innovations PC for counseling support services. It will be paid $90 per hour for counseling and $250 for each psycho-social evaluation and report.

• Approved bid awards for printed forms to Graphically Speaking ($1,054.58), Lotus Events, Inc. ($2,229.25) and WB Mason Company ($1,959.54).

• Approved an instructional services agreement with Brookville Center for Children's Services, Inc. Tuition for its summer program for July and August is $7,441. Tuition for the school year program is $44,645, payable in 10 equal monthly installments.

• Approved a bid award for on-site student management system support for 2013/14 to eSchool Data, LLC at a rate of $125 per hour.

• Approved a list of 35 individuals to work as substitute non-contractual, clerical and building and grounds department employees during 2013/14.

• Authorized the reinstatement of Demetra Doscas as a special education office principal clerk, effective August 30.

• Authorized William Jackson to work as a home tutor in 2013/14 at the rate of pay of $49.95 per hour.

• Approved a bid award for vehicle repair in during 2013/14 to Tilden-Huntington, Inc. at the rate of $48 per hour.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Nirmala Mitra, MD for comprehensive neurological and developmental evaluations. Dr. Mitra will be paid $350 for each neurology evaluation and report.

• Approved a consultant services contract with Frantz N. Moise, MD for adolescent comprehensive psychiatric evaluations. Dr. Moise will be paid $800 for each evaluation and report; $200 per hour for on-site attendance at a CSE meeting; $100 per hour for telephone attendance at a CSE meeting; $150 per 30 minutes of staff consultation and staff development.

• Approved a services agreement with the OMNI Group of Rochester, NY related to administration of the district's employee tax sheltered 403(b) and 457 accounts. The district will be charged $32 per account or $13,568 for 2013/14.

• Awarded bids for music supplies to Casio Interstate Music ($3,082.07), J&B Musical Instruments ($1,832.46), Sam Ash Music Corp. ($2,432.40), Sandy Enterprises ($10.48), Shar Products Company ($2,968.15), Steve Weiss Music ($1,353.50) and Wright Music, Inc. ($407.25).

• Approved a contract with SCOPE Education Services for the district's professional membership affiliation for 2013/14 in the amount of $3,264. "You will not that SCOPE has reduced your membership affiliation fee this year by 15 percent, which represents a 55 percent reduction in membership dues over the past six years," SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy wrote in a memo to the Huntington School District.

• Approved a list of impartial hearing officers related to special education services.

• Approved a gifted and talented services contract with the Syosset Central School District for the 2013/14 school year.

• Approved a special education services contract with the Syosset Central School District for the 2013/14 school year.

• Approved a contract with Vanderheyden Hall in Wynantskill, New York. The 10-month tuition is $34,373; tuition for July and August is $5,729 for the two-month period; The CSE institution rate is $292.46 per day of care.

• Approved an agreement with the South Huntington School District for it to provide services related to the fingerprinting of prospective employees at the rate of $50 per person fingerprinted.

• Approved a consulting agreement with Staten Island based Eden II School for Autistic Children, Inc. for various special education services during the 2013/14 school year.

• Approved an agreement with Emerald Data Solutions, Inc. of Marietta, Georgia for the BoardDocs cloud-based paperless school board document system.

• Approved a special education services contract with Woodward Children's Center in Freeport, New York covering the 2013/14 school year. Tuition for the 10 month program is $37,274 and $6,212 for the six week program. One-to-one aide services are $17,616.60 for the regular school year and $2,936.10 for the summer program.
