Jamison is MOW as Huntington
Wins Title
Corey Jamison edged former state champion William Koll of upstate Lansing to win the Most Outstanding Wrestling Award for the second consecutive year as the Huntington High School wrestling team captured its ninth Windsor Christmas Tournament title since 1990.
Joining Jamison on the victory platform were Blue Devil teammates John Arceri, Brandon Mendez and Anthony Puca, who all grabbed individual weight class crowns. Kyle Mock and Nick Lupi both finished second. John Mallouk took third place.
Huntington compiled 168 points en route to its first place finish, outdistancing Greene (123 points), Canandaigua (123), Union-Endicott (111) and Bainbridge-Guilford/Acton (106) and the rest of the 21 team tournament field. Five other teams withdrew at the last minute due to snowy weather upstate. Windsor is located outside of Binghamton.
“It was a tough tournament, as it always is,” Huntington assistant coach Travis Smith said. “We wrestled well. Whenever you can get six wrestlers into the Windsor finals, it’s a good day. We’re happy.”
In the 126 lb. finals, Jamison earned a 3-1 decision over Koll, who won the 103 lb. Division II state title in 2011. The Huntington teenager was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler by coaches of the competing schools. “Corey did a really great job,” Smith said.
Blue Devil star grappler John Arceri topped Ithaca’s Collyn Shippos by technical fall, 16-0 to take the 99 lb. crown. Mendez upset the field at 145 lbs., easily downing Greene’s Trevor Parrish by major decision in the finals, 11-1. Puca edged Union-Endicott’s Andrew Brinser in a tightly controlled bout, 3-0.
In other championship round action, Corinth’s Jimmy Overhiser felled Mock in the 106 lb. finals. Lupi lost a heartbreaking overtime decision in the 220 lb. finals to Waverly’s Ryan Wolcott, 2-1. The wrestlers traded escapes during regulation before Wolcott broke free again during the first of two 30-second overtime periods and made the lead stand the rest of the way. Mallouk bested Waverly’s Brandon Ellers for third place with a 5-4 overtime victory.
Since entering the tournament for the first time in 1990, Huntington has won nine Windsor Christmas Tournament team titles, finished second seven times and in third place five times. The Blue Devils have also grabbed fifth place twice and earned ninth place once.
Blue Devil Notes: This marked the 56th annual Windsor Christmas Tournament, which bills itself as the oldest high school wrestling tournament in the state . . . The tournament was held over a two-day period, which marks a change from much of the previous two decades when the grueling competition was a one-day affair . . .
