Syosset nipped the Huntington High School softball team, 3-2 in extra innings. Syosset scored the winning run on a walk, sacrifice bunt and an error. Sophomore Blue Devil pitcher Ellyn Byrnes was tagged with the loss.
Huntington was again stymied in the second game of the season when Kings Park pitcher Cassie Cancemi struck out 10 Blue Devils while yielding just three hits in a complete game 12-2 victory. Ellyn Byrnes suffered the loss for Huntington.
HHS Boys' Lax Falls
John Shea, Chris Schoen and Christian Fiordelisi scored for the Huntington boys' lacrosse team but the Blue Devils dropped a 12-3 verdict to Comsewogue. Conor Birchard and Ben Kocis picked up assists for Huntington. Tyler Greenhill stopped 13 shots in goal for the Blue Devils and Dom Tesoriero added five saves in the net.
Huntington Alum's Son an All-American
Huntington High School wrestling immortal Willie Gadson passed away March 10 in Iowa where he was a high school coach at Waterloo East. He had battled cancer for 11 months. The Blue Devil great was a member of Huntington's Class of 1972. He went on to capture two junior college national crowns at Nassau Community College and NCAA Division I All-American honors in 1975 and 1976 at Iowa State University.
Gadson passed away the day after his son, Iowa State sophomore Kyven Gadson won the Big 12 championship. Kyven went on place sixth in the NCAA Division I tournament in Des Moines earlier this month, earning All-American recognition. The Gadson's are one of only two Iowa State father-son All-American combos.
In a touching tribute to his dad, Kyven Gadson wore Willie's Iowa State wrestling robe at the national championships. Willie wore the robe during his two All-American seasons with the Cyclones. Iowa State wore the robes during the 1960s and 1970s. After Gadson wore the garment to his consolation semifinal match, Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson informally polled Cyclone fans and reported that 99 percent want the robes brought back for next season.
Karly Kocis Make History
Huntington High School grad Karly Kocis made history with the St. Bonaventure University women's lacrosse team. The former Blue Devil star was the winning goalkeeper in the Bonnies first shutout ever. Kocis recorded a pair of saves in a 19-0 victory over Delaware State.
A member of Huntington's Class of 2010, Kocis has started five of the first six games she has played in this season, stopped 44 shots. She is 4-1 as the starting goalkeeper.
Kocis is majoring in sports studies at St. Bonaventure. She was outstanding in goal for Huntington, compiling 326 saves and 173 completed clears as a junior and 136 saves and 98 clears as a senior. She captained the Blue Devils as a senior and was a two-time team MVP. She also played tennis, basketball and ice hockey during high school.
PE Teacher Completes Course
Huntington High School physical education teacher Jamie Fishlow completed a CrossFit Level 1 trainer course over a two-day period in Brooklyn. "I was trained on the basic movements, philosophies and concepts," he said. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program.
Mr. Fishlow also sat for and passed a CrossFit exam. "I am now considered a CrossFit Level 1 trainer and have been awarded an ANSI Accredited CrossFit Level 1 trainer certificate. The teacher also coaches the Blue Devil varsity boys' and girls' tennis teams. He has completed several Ironman triathlons.

Hayes-Hurley is Unstoppable
Emma Hayes-Hurley has been unstoppable on the field since transferring from Binghamton University to SUNY Cortland for her sophomore year. The former Blue Devil star has 10 goals, two assists, 27 draw controls, six caused turnovers and five ground balls for the Red Dragons, who are 7-1 and ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III.
Hayes-Hurley scored two goals and added an assist this past Saturday to help lift Cortland over No. 19 SUNY Geneseo, 14-10. The Huntington Class of 2011 member scored the Red Dragons' final goal with 37 second remaining in the second half when she fired in a free position shot.
Hayes-Hurley, who plays midfield, has started all eight Cortland games this spring. She has 26 shots and is tied for fourth on the team in goals scored.
Huntington Class of 2012 member Colleen Wright is also on the Cortland team. She has appeared in three games so far during her freshman year.
