The Busy Life of Alexandra Smith

She hardly has time to sleep. Alexandra Smith leads a busy life. The Huntington High School senior has a long list of activities and responsibilities that keep her running in a variety of directions, but it’s all good.

Ms. Smith recently returned home from the Deep South where she auditioned for the dance major program at the University of Alabama. The teenager’s sister, Molly is already enrolled at the college and she hopes to follow. The audition consisted of ballet, pointe, jazz and modern dance segments.

“I’ve been dancing ever since I was three and have loved it ever since,” Ms. Smith said. The Huntington senior is one of three captains of this year’s Highsteppers competitive dance team, along with Ashley Angstadt and Alexa Gorczycki. She was the junior class captain of the squad last year.

Ms. Smith’s involvement with the Highsteppers has been the highlight of her high school years. “They aren’t just my teammates, they are literally my second family,” she said.

The teenager is also a member of Platinum Performance, a private competitive dance group. “We compete in mostly everything such as hip hop, jazz, tap, contemporary and modern,” Ms. Smith said. “I’ve been with this team for eight years now. This team is definitely going to be the hardest to leave because I have grown up with all of them.”

The senior said she will “never forget” school dean Robert Gilmor. “I have no idea where I would be without him,” Ms. Smith said. “Mr. Gilmor has truly impacted my life. He was always there for me throughout all four years of high school. He has taught me so much through the Natural Helpers group.”

As she begins the process of applying to colleges and auditioning for a spot in their dance major programs, Ms. Smith took time to reflect upon her experience in Huntington. “I would not change anything about my high school years because they have been the time of my life,” she said.
