Smooth Sailing for Chloe Barron
at Towson
The transition from high school to college can sometimes be a rocky one. But, for Chloe Barron, it’s been smooth sailing since the Huntington High School Class of 2012 member landed on the Towson University campus in Maryland.
“I love being at Towson University,” Ms. Barron said. The teenager is enrolled in four classes including French, economics, a Towson seminar branding course and anthropology.
Ms. Barron is majoring in business management and e-business and is carrying a minor in French. “I love taking classes that interest me and have to do with my major,” the Huntington alum said. “My favorite class this semester is my seminar class because I can see the tools I need to be able to be successful in business.”
Ms. Barron participated on the Blue Devil varsity winter and spring track and field teams for three years and formed a bond with head coach Debra Cheskes. She especially enjoyed art classes with teachers Amy Worth and Kristin Singer and also took delight her French class with teacher Deirdre Mayer.
The highlight of Ms. Barron’s Huntington years was all the friendships she formed. Although many of those same friends are now scattered at colleges around the country, the relationships are strong enough to endure the separation and distance. She will also fondly remember the many Advanced Placement classes the teenager challenged herself with.
Kelly McConnell and Molly Arcer, two of Ms. Barron’s good friends from Huntington High School, are also studying at Towson. “We have also been able to establish a larger friend group of new people, as well,” Ms. Barron said.
The Huntington grad is enrolled in classes that feature anywhere from 15 to 50 students. “In college, there is a lot less class time, but you have to know how to budget your time and do your work in your free time,” Ms. Barron said. “You don’t have anyone telling you to do your work, so you are a lot more independent than if you were in high school. Teachers still want to see you get good grades, yet it is more up to the student to make it happen.”
The spring semester at Towson will bring more excitement. “Next semester my roommate and I are going to pledge a sorority,” Ms. Barron said.
