Brielle Blatt Takes Tulane by Storm

Brielle Blatt was a legitimate dynamo over the course of four years at Huntington High School. She graduated last June with fellow members of the Class of 2012 and headed off to Tulane University in New Orleans, where she is becoming an essential part of campus life there.

College is going well for the articulate and energetic young woman. "My favorite class is Jazz Dance because my teacher is incredible and I have learned so much," Ms. Blatt said. "I'm also enjoying my Intro to Public Health class and am considering it as a major."

Ms. Blatt has joined a variety of college organizations. She belongs to TULA, the Tulane University Ladies A Capella, which is not surprising since singing was so dear to her all through high school. She also joined Tulane's Habitat for Humanity chapter, continuing with the group that has meant so much to the teenager.

Interestingly, it was Habitat for Humanity that led Ms. Blatt to Tulane in the first place. She applied to the school after touring the college during a trip to New Orleans with Huntington High School's Habitat for Humanity club two years ago.

The Huntington alum also volunteers as a tutor at Sophie B. Wright Charter School, working with children ranging from grades 6-12. "This is a challenge because a lot of the students are very behind and have trouble with reading and writing," Ms. Blatt said. "I mostly tutor math and science."

Ms. Blatt is the vice president of civic engagement for her residence hall association's government. "I plan community service activities for Sharp, my all freshman dormitory," she said. "I had a cupcake decorating booth at Tulane's Breast Cancer Awareness Fair. Next we are planning an event for Veterans Day where students will write letters to troops and then receive a tank top to tie-dye red, white and blue."

The teenager enjoys going to Zumba for a workout and she hopes to become a certified teacher so she can work there. She has a job at the biology center, where she works nine hours a week.

The Huntington grad stays busy and is enjoying her time in college. "Things are lots of fun," Ms. Blatt said. "There is always something to do. My favorite is 'Fridays at the Quad.' which is from 4-6 p.m. There are always bands playing with free food. It's a nice way to kickoff the weekend."

Ms. Blatt is benefitting from Tulane's location in New Orleans. "The weather is still summer here," she said. "My friends and I like to lounge by the pool on the weekends because during the week we're so busy with class and work."

Some special visitors are expected to arrive in New Orleans this winter. "I can't wait for Huntington High School's Habitat for Humanity club to come down in February and March to build," Ms. Blatt said. "I get to give them a tour of my new home!"
