Mulligan to Play at
SUNY Maritime College

Thomas Mulligan is entering an exciting period of change in his life. The Huntington High School senior has been a student within the safe confines of the district since kindergarten, but come next fall, the teenager will begin studies at SUNY Maritime College and play football for the Privateers.

Mr. Mulligan plans to major in marine transportation at Maritime, a four-year co-ed college located at Fort Schuyler beneath the Throgs Neck Bridge. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a number of marine related areas and also boasts 20 varsity athletic teams.

Maritime College uses the 565-foot training ship, Empire State VI to give students summer experiences at sea. Training cruises to Europe focus on learning more about the maritime industry, ship operations and international cultures.

It seems only natural that Mr. Mulligan intends to be a college athlete. "I have played football and lacrosse all through high school and junior high," he said. "I started playing football in fourth grade in the St. Pat's League. I played in that league for two years and then moved on to the Bulldogs in sixth grade, where I also played for two years.

Mr. Mulligan was a star on the field for the J. Taylor Finley Middle School and JV and varsity squads. He received the Outstanding Receiver Award for the Blue Devils' 2011 season. He's also been involved in Young Leaders, a local youth service organization that helps bring the community closer together.

The Maritime College football team finished last season with a record of 8-2, including a seven game winning streak. The team's end of season banquet was held at Yankee Stadium in the Hard Rock Café.
