Woodhull Pasta Night Draws
Hungry Diners
A crowd of more than 300 hungry diners turned out for this winter's Woodhull Intermediate School sixth grade pasta night. The group was served by about 100 students, who took on the roles of waiters and waitresses, jotting down orders and delivering food in a swift and orderly manner.
PTA volunteers transformed the gym into an Italian restaurant, with the same red tablecloths one would expect to find in such an establishment. Proceeds generated by the event are earmarked to support activities on both the fifth and sixth grade levels at the school.
Preparations for the huge undertaking began weeks ago. The dinner itself consisted of a choice of plain ziti, baked ziti or ziti with tomato sauce, tossed salad, fresh bread, dessert and assorted beverages. Mr. Sausage donated pasta and salad and Reinwalds Bakery donated fresh Italian bread.
The sixth grade waiters and waitresses wore black and white outfits and moved quickly through the "assembly" line, while plates were loaded with hot food. PTA volunteers trained the youngsters for their duties.
The event was chaired by Woodhull PTA President Julie Labella and parent Debbie Caravetto. Many other parents volunteered hours of their time to help insure a smooth running night. "The food was delicious," Mrs. Labella said. "The sixth grade waiters and waitresses did a wonderful job taking orders and serving."
The Woodhull PTA raffled off 40 beautifully decorated baskets that were stuffed with specialty items and gift certificates donated by local businesses and families.
The crowd included Woodhull Principal Mary Stokkers, Assistant Principal Jarrett Stein, Superintendent James W. Polansky, Huntington School Board President Emily Rogan and fellow trustee Jennifer Hebert. The trustees each have a child in sixth grade at Woodhull.
Mrs. Labella said that without all the volunteer assistance, the night would have been impossible to pull off.
