Senior Decides

Huntington High School senior Alexa Giammarino is one of the top members of the Class of 2011. She has been accepted by a long list of colleges for the fall semester, but her choice had basically come down to just two: Northeastern University in Boston or New York University in Manhattan.

Then all of a sudden, the teenager was offered a scholarship by Loyola University in Baltimore. Ms. Giammarino recently visited there with her parents and said she "fell in love with it. As soon as I stepped on the campus, I knew it was the right place for me."

The senior, who is known to give 100 percent to whatever she is working on at any given time, is president of the Class of 2011, senior captain of the Highsteppers, the high school's competitive dance team, treasurer of the National Honor Society and a member of the English, math, science and art honor societies as well as Huntington's Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Ms. Giammarino intends to study biology at Loyola.

Valedictorian to Penn

Carrie Fante, valedictorian of Huntington High School's Class of 2011, has decided to attend the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She had narrowed her choice to either the Ivy League school or Tufts University. Ms. Fante also gained acceptance by Cornell University and Hamilton College.

"My intended major right now is international relations but there's plenty of room for that to change," she said. "I'm also really looking forward to continuing to study economics and continuing to study Spanish, or possibly learning a third language while at Penn."

Flower Hill Retirement Party

A retirement party is planned for Flower Hill School teachers Linda Cirillo and Linda Sauer on Wednesday, June 15 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. at The Harbor Club in Halesite.

The affair will feature a sit-down dinner, dessert with coffee and tea and refreshments. Tickets are on sale for $60. An RSVP by June 3 is requested.

For more information or to RSVP contact Cathy Fede or Corin Walsh at 673-2050.

Exceptional Photographer to Canada

Cody Jacobs is a compelling young photographer. Her work is magnetic and appeals to a wide range of tastes. The Huntington High School senior has decided to attend Concordia University in Quebec, Canada. She had also been accepted by SUNY College at New Paltz and Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Art in Richmond.

Ms. Jacob's is looking forward to heading north. "My excitement is bursting at the seams," she said. "Montreal is a beautiful city and I can't wait to be a part of Concordia's creative environment."

At last week's Huntington High School fashion show, Ms. Jacobs was seen taking it all in from the front row during the 4 p.m. session. No, she wasn't there to snap photos. Instead she paid close attention to each model and what they were wearing.

"The fashion show did great job of showing how much talent is hidden within Huntington High School," Ms. Jacobs said. "Everyone who participated had their moment to shine."
