Huntington School Board Notes
Jefferson Primary School special education aide Vanessa Nilsen's resignation has been accepted by the Huntington School Board. Trustees granted leaves of absence to Huntington High School special education aide Marilyn Strickland (effective February 4 to March 7 – approximately), Southdown School reading teacher Christa Schlosser (March 20 to June 24) and Woodhull School classroom teacher Dina Telesco (April 4 to June 24).
Trustees also accepted retirement requests from Southdown School teacher aide Emmagene Brown (effective June 25) and district special education office secretary Joanne Merenda (effective July 8).
Lorraine Costello (high school, art) and Renee Garcia (Jefferson, special education) were approved to return from leaves of absence. Nancy Allard (K-6 data coordinator) was approved to return from her leave of absence, effective April 1.
Brooke Bene (classroom, Southdown), John Okula (special education, Southdown) and Scott Leonardi (classroom, Woodhull) were all authorized to work as long-term substitute teachers.
Eugene O'Hara was appointed as a senior accountant in the district's business office, effective March 21. He will replace Joyce Keegan, who retired last month. Student Alexa Kaplan was appointed to the high school stage crew and will be paid $7.25 per hour.
Teachers Catharine Barth and Tracy McManus were authorized to work in the Flower Hill School ELA/Math test prep program. Suzanne Knoerzer and Donna Marie O'Shaughnessy were appointed as substitute teachers in the program.
Teachers Karen Mallow-Rizzo, Evelyn D'Andraia, Marissa Damiano and Luz Marotta were authorized to work in the Jefferson School ELA/Math test prep program. Nicole Parrett, Allison Daly Muradyan and Priya Mondkar were appointed as substitute teachers in the program.
Teachers Peri Alfano and Doreen Ellis were authorized to work in the Washington School ELA/Math test prep program. Debra Collins was appointed as a substitute teacher in the program.
Teachers Kimberly Myers-Bender and Soraya Triessl were authorized to work in the Southdown School ELA/Math test prep program. David Crimi was appointed as a substitute teacher in the program.
Susan Danzig was appointed to work in the Woodhull School ELA/Math test prep program.
The ELA/Math test prep program will run from March 20 through April 20. The teachers will be paid $48.97 per hour.
Trustees also took the following actions:
• Approved a series of budget transfers from one account code to another to cover the costs associated with curriculum development ($16,340), special education test protocols ($1,500), attendance at the conference "Safe Travel for all Children: Transporting Children with Special Health Care Needs" ($100), attendance at a New York State School Boards Assn. conference ($200) and attendance at a conference/workshop on student bullying ($50).
• Approved contracts with Mill Neck Services for Deaf Adults and South Oaks Comprehensive Behavioral Health Continuum. The first contract deals with interpreter services. The latter one concerns AIMSweb training services.
• Authorized Huntington High School student Mikah Feldman-Stein to go on an overnight field trip to perform in the All-State jazz ensemble in Albany.
• Approved bid awards for the disposal of surplus equipment to Mid Island Salvage Corp. ($440) and Urban Renewal Corp. ($0).
• Authorized teacher Debra Collins to receive reimbursement for district related travel between buildings.
• Approved bid awards for various printed forms and publications including The Dispatch, the adult education brochure, transportation newspaper, budget notice, Et Cetera literary magazine, academic awards and commencement booklets and the bid general conditions bulletin.
• Joseph Leavy, district director of humanities, was authorized to provide up to six hours of professional development activities at the rate of $75 per hour.
• Clara Krapf, Margaret Florio and Maryanne O'Mara were appointed to provide clerical services at kindergarten registration programs during March. Ms. Krapf and Ms. O'Mara will be paid $10.50 per hour. Ms. Florio will be paid $30 per hour.
• Demetra Doscas was approved for a change in assignment from 10-month clerk typist at Flower Hill School to 12-month senior clerk typist in the district special education office.
• Finley Middle School teacher David Warren was authorized to supervise a teaching assistant in reading. He will be paid a stipend of $376.
• Charlene Treffeisen had her assignment changed from 12-month senior clerk typist in the special education office to 12-month principal clerk.
• Madeline Musante had her assignment changed from 10-month clerk typist in the Finley Middle School library to 12-month senior clerk typist in the special education office.
• Bik Bialkowski had her assignment changed from 10-month clerk typist in the special education office to 10-month clerk typist in the Finley library and attendance offices.
• Fernando Gomez was appointed as an instructor in the district's adult education program. He will be paid $25 per hour.
