First Daniel Guido Memorial Scholarship Presented
There’s no debating that Dan Guido was a wildly popular member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2001. When he passed away suddenly last June, it was a crushing loss to his family, friends and classmates. He was 25 years old and a member of the New York Police Department stationed in the 28th precinct in Harlem.
Mr. Guido’s smile could light up a large room. His personality was larger than life. Throngs attended a wake for him at M.A. Connell Funeral home and his funeral at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Centerport as well as a graveside service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Huntington. More than five dozen entries were made in an online tribute book hosted by Legacy.com.
In the aftermath of the tragic loss Mr. Guido’s parents, Guy and Linda, sisters, Denise and Kristen and brother, Peter created the Daniel J. Guido Memorial Scholarship and earmarked it for a “student who has exhibited the most significant growth, socially and academically, from their freshman to senior years.”
The scholarship was presented for the first time earlier this month, along with a $500 stipend, to Huntington High School senior Lori Messina, who is headed to Syracuse University in the fall.
Nine years earlier at the 2001 senior academic awards night in the same high school auditorium, Daniel John Guido received many honors himself, including the T. Christopher Pettit Award and scholarships presented by the Huntington Alumni Association and the Parent-Teacher-Student Association.
Widely known as a loving, wonderful, happy and sweet young man, Mr. Guido is terribly missed by those who knew him well. They are filled with memories of his antics and accomplishments. He was a ball of fire; a live wire.
Mr. Guido had a knack for cheering up friends who needed a lift. He was the 2000 Homecoming Day king, Key club president and served as vice-president of the student government.
“After a rocky start as a freshman, Dan worked hard and finished on top as a senior,” said Valerie Allocco, Mr. Guido’s aunt, who presented the award to Ms. Messina.
