Huntington School News & Notes

Maya Horton, a 2010 Huntington High School graduate, is a freshman at SUNY College at Geneseo. She is one of 39 Edgar Fellows there. It is an honors program for students exhibiting a high level of motivation and academic accomplishment. The program involves honors courses, research opportunities and close collaboration with honors advisors.

SEPTA Coffee Talk on October 20

The Huntington Special Education Parent Teacher Association will hold its monthly Coffee Talk on Wednesday, October 20 at 9:45 a.m. at Jefferson Primary School located on Oakwood Road. Lynn Hefele, a veteran physical education teacher in the district will be the guest speaker.

Parents attending the meeting will be provided with information, advice and encouragement. All parents are invited to attend.

Alternative School Appointments

Huntington High School teachers Helen Guarino (English 9-10) and Fred Bisogno (U.S. History) have been appointed to work in the after school alternative high school program. Huntington School Board members had earlier appointed Ms. Guarino to teach English 11-12 and Mr. Bisogno to teach Global-10. Trustees have now added additional teaching responsibilities to their respective portfolios. Alternative high school teachers earn $53.25 per hour.

Personnel Moves

Huntington High School foreign language teacher Sarah Hull has been appointed as an independent study advisor for Latin-10. The post carries a stipend of $876.

Nancy Giorgos has been given a probationary appointment as an ESL teacher. She will be working at Washington Primary School this year. The probationary period runs through September 1, 2013.

Lab Assistant

Holly Flores has been appointed to work as a Huntington High School student lab assistant during the 2010/11 school year. She will be paid $7.25 per hour. Ms. Flores joins seven other recently appointed student lab assistants.

Leaves of Absence

Huntington High School social studies teacher William Byrne has been granted a leave of absence related to military service. The leave is effective October 1.

Rhonda Nixon, a teacher's aide at Huntington High School, was granted a leave of absence through January 4, 2011.

Reach for the Stars

The Huntington Foundation's Reach for the Stars fundraising gala is set for Friday, January 21, 2011 at The Woodlands in Syosset. This year's festive event will honor Huntington Booster Club President Barbara Cutrone, who will be presented with the group's Spirit Award.

Senior Class Officers

Huntington High School's senior class is led by Alexa Giammarino (president), Rebecca Deegan (vice-president), Melisa Cartagena (corresponding secretary), Jonah Kramer (recording secretary), Jessica Harris (historian) and Danielle Cerezo (treasurer). Teachers Eliana Oranges and Lori Pyzocha serve as advisors to the Class of 2011.
