Flower Hill Takes Over Book Revue
The Flower Hill Primary School community invaded Book Revue in Huntington village on a recent afternoon. Families joined teachers and Principal Marlon Small for special readings and fun events at the store.
When the youngsters arrived many were surprised to find blue and white balloons decorating the space. The balloons, which were donated for the occasion by Value Drugs, featured the school colors. Tables were set-up in the children’s book section and filled with an assortment of entertaining crafts for the students to get to work on.
There were book bags to decorate, bookmarks to weave out of yarn, beads to assemble and various activity books for word searches and coloring. Many students gravitated toward the thousands of books spilling out of shelves and got lost in a sea of words of pictures.
Many were captivated by stories read to them by Mr. Small and teachers Suzanne Giuliani, Katie Alexander, Claudia Mingin, Risa Brachman and Lisa Baldanza.
Flower Hill teachers, who rushed over to Book Revue directly from work, were treated to an afternoon snack courtesy of Dao, the new Asian restaurant in town.
PTA volunteers Maureen Starr, Donna Cahill and Susan Minson helped organize the event. Book Revue donated a portion of the sales in which a special PTA coupon was used to the Flower Hill PTA. The monies will be plowed back into a variety of initiatives and benefit students on all grade levels.
Mr. Small is a strong proponent of using every available opportunity to get students to read. He enjoys seeing youngsters around books and spending time in bookstores, libraries and anywhere else where they can find open space to crack open a book.
