Blue Ribbons of Excellence Awarded at Art Show

Several thousand visitors explored last week’s art show in the Huntington School District, with many expressing astonishment that the work was produced by students ranging from five to 18 years of age.  Works ran the gamut and the display was so extensive that special maps were printed to help residents navigate their way around the exhibition area.

The annual event is timed to coincide with the district’s budget vote and trustee election.  Residents were encouraged to walk down the high school’s main hallway from the lobby where voting machines were located to the gym, where thousands of art works were on display.

“The 2009 art show was just amazing,” said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts. “The quality and creativity of the work was so inspiring.  Every year our art teachers provide new projects and challenges for our students and it’s so exciting to see the results.”

On Tuesday there were afternoon and evening video and fashion shows, which were enjoyed by standing room only crowds of about 400.  “The art teachers and I really enjoyed watching our parents and students really taking time to look at the full exhibit,” Mrs. Fretz said. “It's such a wonderful way to learn about our art program and all the special learning opportunities Huntington provides.”

The finest pieces in the show were honored with a Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award.  “The community was really impressed with the quality of the work,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “It’s remarkable what our students and teachers can produce.  We have such a wonderful art program here in Huntington.”
