Huntington School Briefs

Huntington High School played host to the Harvard Club of Long Island’s Alumni-Student Interview Day.  The event, held on a recent Saturday, saw 23 local students who have applied to attend Harvard in the fall, interviewed by alumni members.

“Each student who applies to Harvard gets an interview,” said Bernadette Walsh, Huntington’s college counselor.  Ms. Walsh helped coordinate the day along with Harvard Club of LI Advisory Board members Dick and Dottie Oehmler.

Mr. Oehmler earned an undergraduate degree at Harvard in 1956 and graduated from the business school there in 1960.  He served on the Huntington School Board from 1976 to 1988 and has been interviewing Harvard applicants since 1960.  Mrs. Oehmler obtained her Harvard degree in 1957 and has interviewed students since 1970.  She was a Huntington PTA president in the 1980’s.

“Each interview lasts approximately one hour,” said Mrs. Walsh about the alumni conducted interviews.  In addition to Huntington, applicants came from Half Hollow Hills West, Commack, John Glenn, Cold Spring Harbor, St. Anthony’s, Northport, Kings Park and Harborfields high schools.

A set of classrooms located in one of Huntington High School’s wings was dedicated to the interview program.

Friendship Club Peer Mentors

“The Friendship club at Finley is thriving thanks to the students who make it happen,” Finley Principal John Amato said.  “The club provides time for students to reach out to others for games and social interaction other than through their classroom experience.  I would like to personally thank the peer mentors for making the club a success.”

The peer mentors on the receiving end of Mr. Amato’s hearty thanks are Kelly Askerberg, Maggie Askerberg, Bella Rubinton, Nikki Smoot, Caroline Coffey, Laura Ironman, Scout Zeigler, Jonathan Wood, Nick Lupi, Brent Filippini, Brian Marek, Gordon LaMour, Sydney Andree, Justin Rothleder, Josh Toor,  Matt Corcorin, Katherine Gallagher, Clair Beach, Jordan Lowe, Isziarah Owens, Hannah Helrich, Frank Yeh and Mary Elizabeth Koepele.

PTA Mobilizes

Huntington School District PTA members have mobilized the school community on behalf of “two wonderful Huntington families” that saw their homes damaged by fires.  The families lost their belongings in the blazes so the PTA members are spearheading the collection of clothes and gift cards to help get the parents and their children back up on their collective feet.  The two blazes were fought by 105 fire fighters from six departments utilizing 16 trucks.
