Hicks at St. Joe’s

At this time last year Kerry Hicks was starring for the Huntington girls’ basketball team. Now she’s a freshman at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Although the former Blue Devil great isn’t on the NCAA Division I basketball team there, she is still involved in the sport as she helped St. Joe’s club team win the East Coast collegiate club title last month.

“From the first practice this semester, Kerry stood out,” said Alexandra Bretschneider, the founder and coach of the St. Joe’s club team. “Quiet at first, but very talented, she instantly clicked with one of our most talented forwards during scrimmages.”

Bretschneider said Hicks started off “shaky” in St. Joe’s first tournament on the schedule at Georgetown University, “as any freshman would. She found her place and became an essential piece to our offense. She is by far, the best point guard we have had, and I used to be one of our point guards. She is very talented, allowing us to draw up plays that put her in the position to drive or shoot three's.”

In the club championship game, St. Joe’s trailed North Carolina State at halftime by 10 points. Then Hicks pumped in 20 second half points to turn the game around. “Kerry instantly clicked with the girls,” Bretschneider said. “She has the ideal personality that I look for in player. She is an excellent player, but is modest, and never shows a temper. She has a positive attitude, and is an absolute pleasure to be around. I am grateful that she chose to come to St. Joseph's, and I hope to see her captain the team in due time.”
