The Nutcracker at
Huntington High School

The Nutcracker, which has entertained audiences around the world for more than 100 years, will take to the stage in the Huntington High School auditorium for performances on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19 and 20 as the Lynch Ballet Company brings the classic to life just in time for the holiday season.

Composed by Tchaikovsky in 1891-92, The Nutcracker is one of the most popular and beloved ballets of all-time. The performances in Huntington promise to be splendid as the Lynch Ballet Company will put on a show audiences will long remember.

Tickets are available at $20 for adults and $15 for children. The curtain will go up on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. For more information or to secure tickets visit www.lynchballet.com or call (631) 470-9711.

The guiding force behind the local ballet company is Karen Lynch, wife of Huntington teacher and athletic coach Michael Marinello. Ms. Lynch is an accomplished ballerina and gifted instructor in her own right. She’s danced professionally with the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Kansas City Ballet and taught ballet in the Huntington area for the past 15 years.

The Lynch School of Ballet, of which the Lynch Ballet Company is its not-for-profit arm, is a relative newcomer to the local scene, but it’s already gaining widespread respect in the world of ballet.

The Nutcracker is expected to be a first class production with Ms. Lynch serving as its artistic director and Anthony Jones handling choreography duties. Many of the dancers in production live right here in Huntington.

Ms. Lynch is donating free tickets to children in need for The Nutcracker shows on Dec. 19 and Dec. 20. The tickets will be given to Huntington principals for distribution to students in their buildings. The free tickets represent an effort give others an opportunity to enjoy this timeless holiday ballet.

This month Ms. Lynch will also be visiting the four primary schools in the Huntington School District for an arts-in-education program presentation of The Nutcracker Suite, spending a day in each building. First grade classes will work with her for 30 minutes apiece, each learning special parts they will later perform at a school-wide assembly with about 10 Lynch School of Ballet dancers. Students will sit in a horseshoe format as the dancers use the gym floor for much of the production.

Since opening the Lynch School of Ballet last September, Ms. Lynch has attracted more than 100 students, including Huntington High School senior Clare Tonks, who was honored by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday as a scholar-artist, one of only 20 on Long Island.

The Lynch School of Ballet is located at 237A East Main Street (Route 25A) in Huntington. The non-profit Lynch Ballet Company has been formed to provide aspiring young people with an opportunity to pursue dancing where they otherwise would not be able to. Visit www.lynchballet.com for more information on Ms. Lynch or her school.
