Fred SchubertFred A. Schubert, a 1966 graduate of Huntington High School, has been vice-president, finance for NUKEM, Inc. in Danbury, CT since 1993. He first joined the company in 1989 as director of finance, before earning a promotion to his current position.

Mr. Schubert graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude in European history from Princeton University in 1970. He obtained an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1977. In between degrees, he served as a unit commander in the US Army from 1971 through 1973 during the Vietnam War.

Before joining the NUKEM team, Mr. Schubert worked as the chief financial officer for a pair of small development companies and was a plant controller for Pfizer, Inc., the pharmaceutical giant.

According to the company’s website, “NUKEM, Inc., together with its parent NUKEM GmbH, has transitioned from playing a modest role in uranium brokerage to becoming one of the world’s largest intermediaries in the global uranium marketplace, one of the top five providers of uranium to nuclear power plants worldwide, one of the major suppliers to the uranium spot market [and] one of the world’s largest global traders of uranium, conversion and enrichment services.”

Mr. Shubert and his wife are parents to two children and reside in Fairfield, CT.

John Lee (Huntington Class of 2006) recently finished his second year as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This summer, he is far from the shores of America.

“I'm in the beautiful city of Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu, south of the mainland of Japan,” Mr. Lee said. “I'm in the language study abroad program through the Naval Academy. We basically go to class every day for about 4-5 hours to learn Japanese, live in an apartment, and become immersed in Japanese language. Recently, we did a weekend trip to Nagasaki, which was very interesting. It was strange to walk through the atomic bomb museum as an American.”

When he returns, Mr. Lee will participate in a four-week training program that includes week-long experiences at Camp Lejeune (Marines), NAS Oceana (Naval Aviation), Kings Bay, Georgia (submarines) and another at the Naval Academy.

“On August 16, I leave for Japan again,” said Mr. Lee, who academically carries an ocean engineering major and Japanese minor. “This time I will be in Yokosuka, studying at the Japan National Defense Academy. It should be an intense learning experience and international relations builder.”

Mr. Lee finished the spring semester with a 3.52 grade point average, earning him a spot on both the Dean’s and Commandant’s lists. He also played on the USNA’s junior varsity basketball team last winter.
