Huntington High School Class of 1960 Plans 50th Reunion

Huntington High School’s Class of 1960 is planning a 50th reunion celebration. A committee is up and running and at a recent meeting tentatively decided to hold a dinner-dance on Saturday, October 23 at the Huntington Crescent Club.

The reunion will coincide with Huntington High School’s homecoming weekend activities, including a Saturday morning parade through Huntington village and a 2 p.m. football game against East Hampton at Blue Devil Stadium.

The reunion weekend activities remain under discussion for Friday night and Sunday. The seven member organizing committee will meet again on June 16 for another planning session. A recent e-mail sent to class members said the reunion committee “believes that everyone should count on approximately $250 per person for expenses for all three nights and obviously less for one or two nights.”

The Class of 1960 graduated on Tuesday, June 28, 1960 during an 8:15 p.m. ceremony in the virtually brand new high school auditorium. It was Huntington’s 99th annual commencement. The class was led by valedictorian Charlotte Tay Moss and salutatorian Kristy Asbury. Superintendent of Schools J. Taylor Finley presented the class members at the commencement and Board of Education President Alexander Wilson presented the seniors with their diplomas. Legendary music teacher Rufus E. Kern directed the performance of the high school band, which played the traditional processional, Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance No. 1.”

The organizing committee is asking 1960 graduates to signal their interest in attending the reunion by sending an e-mail as soon as possible to class member Barry Griefer at bgriefer@gmail.com. The Class of 1960 has held four previous reunions, but it hopes that the 50th anniversary bash will be its best ever.

The Huntington Crescent Club was the site of a 50th reunion party last fall for Huntington’s Class of 1959 and Jerry Asher, one of the event’s organizers, said everyone was pleased with how the party came off there.
