Catching up with Chris Strub
Christopher Strub, a former editor-in-chief of the Huntington High School newspaper, The Dispatch, graduated last month from SUNY Binghamton and is working at the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, a major daily newspaper located in the Southern Tier.
Mr. Strub works full-time at the paper on the news desk and writes a column that appears Thursdays. A member of Huntington’s Class of 2003, he was extremely active in the school’s athletic and music programs, in addition to his work with The Dispatch.
“Right now, I'm living in an apartment in Binghamton, in upstate New York,” Mr. Strub said. The Huntington alum completed his studies at Binghamton with a double-major, earning a B.A. degree in Economics and English, General Literature and Rhetoric, with a concentration in Rhetoric. He found it “cool” to walk in the school’s first fall commencement ceremony.
At Huntington High School, Mr. Strub was extremely involved in all aspects of school life, from the student newspaper to the after school club, athletics and music programs. He was one of the best Blue Devil tennis players during his years on the varsity team. That same spirit of involvement carried over to his college experience.
“While in school, I worked for 4 ½ years with Pipe Dream, our school's newspaper,” Mr. Strub said of his college years. “I was the paper's sports editor during my sophomore year and I covered the school's men's basketball team from fall of 2004 through the spring of 2007, including the team's three trips to the America East conference tournament and the press conferences where we fired our old head coach (Al Walker) and hired a new one (Kevin Broadus, an assistant coach from Georgetown).”
Mr. Strub cut his teeth with The Dispatch, giving it his all as one of its most dedicated editors ever. He was equally committed to Binghamton’s Pipe Dream. “Over my time at the newspaper, I covered all sorts of different sports, including volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, even Frisbee,” said Mr. Strub, who played for two years on the school’s Ultimate Frisbee team.
At Binghamton, Mr. Strub also continued playing bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet for two years, until 2005. “I also played a gig with the Binghamton Community Band and played three times with the BU commencement ensemble during graduation ceremonies in 2004, 2005 and 2006,” he said.
His work at the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin has grown over time. “I began working part-time with the paper as an undergraduate in October of 2006, and I started as a weekly columnist for the newspaper in the spring,” Mr. Strub said. “I have been writing a column each week for the paper's Viewpoints section. Just this week, I got promoted to a full-time, salaried spot on the paper's News Desk, and am currently considering what else my future entails.”
Huntington High School gave Mr. Strub an opportunity to explore his interests and chart a path for his future. “Since graduating from Huntington in 2003, I've really discovered that writing is my passion, as I've written hundreds of newspaper articles and columns, mostly sports-related, since my days as the Editor-in-Chief of The Dispatch,” he said. Despite rising in the newspaper world, ee also admitted that he does “miss the days of working” with Huntington teachers and newspaper advisors James Graber and Peter Crugnale.
Since graduating college, Mr. Strub has started a blog about the Binghamton basketball team. It can be found at http://bearcatcountry.blogspot.com. “It's really become my new passion for writing whatever I feel at the time,” he said.
He’s also no stranger in his own hometown. “I love coming back home to Long Island to see friends and family, and to work occasionally as a basketball referee for St. Hugh's Church,” Mr. Strub added. He’s always welcome at Huntington High School.
