Buchholtz Photo Displayed
at High Arts Showcase XI
Nora Buchholtz has emerged as one of the best young photographers on Long Island, if not the state. The Huntington High School senior is producing imaginative work and exploring a wide range of styles as she expands her portfolio and acquires even more advanced skills.
Ms. Buchholtz recently had one of her photographs accepted for exhibit at the Huntington Art Council’s High Arts Showcase XI at the Main Street Petite Gallery in the village. The piece generated a buzz and lots of discussion.
“I’ve always had a passion for photography, but never pursued anything until I was in high school,” Ms. Buchholtz said in an artist’s statement that accompanied the work that was recently exhibited.
“They don’t offer photography to freshmen so I couldn’t wait for sophomore year,” Ms. Buchholtz said. “I remember being so excited to finally take a class I was interested in and on top of that, the teacher, Mrs. [Pamela] Piffard, could not have been more helpful. She is one of the nicest people I have ever met and has become a great mentor to me. She inspires me to pursue a life in photography.”
The teenager is headed to the University of Kansas in the fall. She plans to pursue studies leading to a career as a professional photographer.
The photograph displayed at High Arts Showcase XI is splendid work appreciated by folks of all ages. “The image presented in this show is a surrealistic piece created in an abandoned house in Huntington,” Ms. Buchholtz explained. “The creepy nature of the abandoned house combined with the levitation aspect creates a dreamlike atmosphere. The surreal works of Duane Michaels as well as Maggie Taylor influenced me. Both artists have a unique point of view that I both admire and strive to achieve in my own work.”
