Southdown Recognizes its Winter Stars

Southdown Primary School honored its winter stars for December and January during its recent “splash” assembly in the gym. Students on every grade level were honored along with a pair of teachers.

Southdown is the home of the dolphins, the school’s mascot. Students are awarded “splashes” for displaying positive behavior in the classroom and out and about the building, including being kind to others, demonstrating proper behavior in hallways and even boosting the spirits of someone feeling a little down.

One Southdown student is selected from each class in the building for formal recognition at the monthly “splash” assembly. The school considers these youngsters to be its stars of the month.

December stars included:

Kindergarten: Loreley Castillo, Ayla Schulman, Mia Gormsen

First grade: Nikolay Caldwell, Ethan Meza-Arevalo, Dayana Alvarez, Zayvion McCoy, Carlos Jimenez

Second grade: Jack Kamenstein, Louis Skrobela, Jasmine Awuah

Third grade: Amber Miles, Angie Uceda, Yareli Campos

Fourth grade: Chelsea Romero, Isilma Reyes-Canales, Arlet Euceda, Victor Chavez

January’s stars included:

Kindergarten: Snaijder Obando, Keysi Valencia, Brayon Ruiz, Clive Polinsky

First grade: Cesia Escobar-Lazo, Josue Villatoro Bonilla, Ilyana Tauz, Graham Gooch

Second grade: Kennedy Banner, Joanna Villarta, Kyra Larsen

Third grade: Daniela Castillo Molina, Sophie Carlson, Christian Yanes

Fourth grade: Anna Knutson, Sam Cherry, Jake Schmitt, Donna Lazo

In addition to the monthly student honorees, the “splash” assembly also recognized first grade teacher Pamela Schwarting and substitute teacher Fran Beach.

“Mrs. Schwarting is a teacher leader at Southdown Primary School,” Mr. Oshrin said. “She organizes all ‘splash’ assemblies and facilitates many building wide positive behavior initiatives. Mrs. Beach is one of our most reliable and hardworking substitute teachers. While she is not a full time member of our staff, she is part of our family.”
