Huntington JV Softball Keeps Hitting
Good hitting, pitching and fielding is keeping the Huntington High School junior varsity softball team competitive this spring.
The Blue Devils played well in several recent games as the weather has finally started to turn warmer. Huntington dropped a 12-11 verdict to Kings Park after storming back to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning, only to fall before they could closeout the win. “We showed good heart and determination, battling to the final out,” head coach Jim Byrnes said.
The defense shined against Kings Park, with Morgan Minicozzi, Katie Riley and Nina Danseglio all making nice plays in the outfield. Leading an impressive hitting attack was Alexandra Gerbavsits, who collected three hits. Anna Wickey, Isabella Toscano, Minicozzi and Danseglio banged out two hits apiece.
Against Centereach, the Blue Devils faced a team that sported a game quite similar to Kings Park. Huntington responded with tight defense and fine plays in the outfield, which kept the score close until the final at bat. Maya DelGuidice had two hits and pitched well in her second consecutive game on the mound.
“Maya helped pick-up the team,” Byrnes said. “We were dealing with a couple of injuries, which left us short at some positions.”
