AP Courses Plentiful at Huntington High School

Huntington High School students have never been hesitant to challenge themselves over the years and with an extensive lineup of Advanced Placement courses in the current curriculum guide, there are plenty of offerings to meet the interests of everyone seeking rigorous studies.

A high percentage of Huntington students traditionally enroll in one or more Advanced Placement courses each year. Their performance on the spring AP exams has been laudable.

This year, 21 Advanced Placement courses are being offered in a traditional classroom setting. The classes include: Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, French Language & Culture, Environmental Science, Italian Language & Culture, Latin, Microeconomics, Music Theory, Physics I, Psychology, Spanish Language & Culture, Statistics, Studio Art: 2-D Design, Studio Art: Drawing, U.S. Government & Politics, U.S. History and World History.

Four additional classes are being offered as “virtual” AP courses over the internet. They include Comparative Government & Politics, European History, Human Geography and Macroeconomics.

The Huntington School Board has approved AP Human Geography to run as a classroom course beginning in the 2015/16 school year. Comparative Government & Politics, European History and Macroeconomics might be proposed to join the classroom lineup next year.

“One of our primary goals is to provide a rigorous high school program that prepares students for the demands of post-secondary academia and their future careers,” Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “Offering a range of challenging Advanced Placement courses certainly helps us to accomplish that goal annually.”

Many Huntington students have gained college credits through the AP program allowing them to obtain an undergraduate degree in less than four years.

“The College Board’s Advanced Placement program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies - with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement or both - while still in high school,” according to the College Board. Taking AP courses demonstrates to college admission officers that students have sought the most rigorous curriculum available to them, and research indicates that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP exam typically experience greater academic success in college and are more likely to earn a college degree than non-AP students. Most four-year colleges and universities in the United States grant credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of successful AP Exam scores - more than 3,300 institutions worldwide annually receive AP scores.”
