Huntington School Briefs
The Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education has teamed up with two local restaurants to raise money for innovative school programs.
Located on the corner of Clinton and Gerard Streets in Huntington village, Doppio Artisan Bistro (923-1515) and Char Grille (923-3400) will donate 10 percent of all proceeds on Thursday, November 6 to the Huntington Foundation. The two establishments are open from 12-10 p.m. for lunch, dinner and drinks. Reservations are strongly suggested.
Music by “Tomorrow’s Sunday” featuring Al Mercado, Walter Smith and Mike Connell will fill the air during dinner at Char Grille.
The Huntington Foundation is a not-for-profit organization. Its annual report may be obtained upon request from the Foundation (P.O. Box 552, Huntington, NY 11743) or from the Office of the Attorney General, Charities Bureau (120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271).
PTA Collects Candy
The Washington Primary School PTA is collecting unwanted Halloween candy this week. The organization will donate whatever is donated to the Helping Hands Rescue Mission in Huntington Station. It will be used to create goody bags for the holidays and given to local needy families.
Finley Long-Term Sub Tech Teacher
Stefano Cori has been appointed to work as a long-term part-time substitute technology teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. He holds an Associate of Science degree in electronic engineering from SUNY Farmingdale and a BS in technology education from New York Institute of Technology. He is currently studying for a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree at SUNY Stony Brook.
Prior to coming to Huntington, Mr. Cori worked as a quality assurance engineer for Honeywell Corp for 17 years and as a per diem substitute teacher in Lindenhurst for four years.
District officials reviewed 14 applications, pre-screened six candidates and went on to conduct personal interviews with all six.
Outback Partners with Washington PTA
Outback Steakhouse in the Huntington Big H Shopping Center is hosting two “give back” nights to benefit the Washington School PTA. Outback will donate to the PTA 10 percent of the total bill of diners who mention Washington Primary School on Saturday and Sunday, November 8-9.
New HHS Math Teacher
Michelle Wenz has been appointed to serve as a probationary mathematics teacher and assigned to Huntington High School. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics at Queens College in May 2013.
Ms. Wenz participated in the TIME (Teaching Improvements through Mathematics Education) 2000 four year secondary mathematics teacher preparation program at Queens College, receiving a scholarship. Students in the program double major in mathematics and secondary education.
Ms. Wenz worked in Huntington during the 2013/14 school year as a part-time and long-term substitute math teacher. She completed her initial clinical and student teacher requirements at Elmont Memorial High School. She has worked as an algebra and geometry tutor since January 2009.
District officials reviewed 24 applications, pre-screened 10 candidates and conducted eight personal interviews before recommending Ms. Wenz for appointment. She is eligible for tenure on September 1, 2017.
Dual Language Long-Term Sub
Michelle Melara has been appointed to work as a long-term substitute dual language teacher at Woodhull Intermediate School through approximately January 1, 2015.
Ms. Melara earned BA (elementary education and French) and MS (teaching English as a second language) degrees at CUNY Queens College. She was a member of the Pi Delta Phi French Honor Society while in college.
Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Melara worked as a substitute teacher in the West Hempstead and North Merrick school districts. She was also a teacher aide in the Rockville Centre and North Bellmore school districts.
District officials reviewed 30 applications, pre-screened 11 candidates and conducted five personal interviews before recommending Ms. Melara for appointment
