Band Fest Popular

This year’s Huntington Band Fest proved to be very popular, drawing a crowd of 190 students. “Band Fest was a ton of fun,” said Ben Conner, a J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grader. “I enjoyed the pieces and working with musicians of all ages.”

Eighth grader Joshua Yanuck was equally impressed with the day. “It was great seeing many of the high school band members again,” Mr. Yanuck said. “I haven’t seen them since marching band ended. It was like a reunion.”

Peter Ciccone, also an eighth grader at Finley, agreed with the sentiments offered by his classmates. “The musical selections were awesome,” Mr. Ciccone said. “I also enjoyed the mid-day march-off competition.”

LoTurco Wins Gold Medal in LI Math Fair

The results are in and Justin LoTurco is smiling. The Huntington High School junior won a gold medal in this year’s Long Island Math Fair at Hofstra University.

Mr. LoTurco presented his research and the judges found his work exceptional. The Huntington scholar was among 72 Long Island juniors who advanced to the final round of the competition and one of just 21 in Nassau and Suffolk that captured a gold medal.

Mr. LoTurco began researching Morley’s Triangle last fall and gained a masterful understanding of the proof. He was mentored along the way by Huntington High School math teacher Patricia Tagliente. The teenager had to research the trigonometric identities that are not discussed in high school classes.

Mr. LoTurco perfected the proof by demonstrating the equilateral relationship formed by the trisections of any triangle, according to Ms. Tagliente. He qualified for the LI finals after presenting his research to a panel of expert judges at Suffolk Community College in Selden.

The Huntington seniors were feted by various regional education and arts officials, including Roger Tilles, Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents.

Sarah L. Gill, Huntington’s district director of fine and performing arts, joined Ms. Barca and Ms. Tome-Radigan at the event
