Trustees Decide to Leave
School Board Seat Vacant

Adam Spector won re-election to a second three year term on the Huntington School Board last May. But, the dedicated community member passed away before being sworn in on July 1. His loss has been felt across the district, especially among his family, friends and fellow trustees as well as the administrators he worked closely with.

Mr. Spector’s passing created a vacancy on the seven member strong Huntington School Board. Trustees discussed the vacancy during a public meeting in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School auditorium this past Monday evening.

The law allows trustees to call a special election to fill the unexpired portion of Mr. Spector’s term. The costs of such an election could run as high as $20,000, including expenses to print legal notices, rent machines, pay election clerks and cover custodial overtime.

Trustees are also permitted to appoint a member of the community to the seat until the next regularly scheduled election, which will be held in May 2015. Finally, trustees are authorized to leave the seat vacant until the next regularly scheduled election.

After discussing the law and the options available to them, trustees voted 5-0 (William Dwyer was traveling on business and unable to attend the meeting) to leave Mr. Spector’s seat vacant. It will be filled when residents go to the polls next spring. The candidate elected to fill the unexpired portion of the term will immediately be sworn into office and assume their responsibilities.
