The Huntington High School girls' softball team needed a victory and got it when Ellyn Byrnes walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to force in Beth Coneys with the winning run as the Blue Devils nipped visiting Kings Park, 6-5.
Huntington (7-7 in Suffolk League V play) tied the score at 5-5 in the sixth inning when Tara Byrnes smacked a single to drive in Kaitlin Wascher. Both players collected two hits each in the game. Ellyn Byrnes was the winning pitcher and also banged out three hits.
One day earlier the Blue Devils fell at home to Rocky Point (10-3 in league play), 5-4. The Eagles broke a 4-4 stalemate with an RBI double in the top half of the sixth inning.
Saputo Stars at Drexel
Nick Saputo is enjoying a great career with the Drexel University men's lacrosse team. The 2011 Huntington High School alum played in 15 games for the Dragons this spring. He picked up a team-high 115 ground balls, won 187-of-344 face-offs, scored four goals and added three assists from his midfield position. Drexel has a record of 11-4.
Saputo played in 13 games as a college freshman last spring, scoring two goals, scooping up 24 ground balls and taking 37-of-65 face-offs.
The former Blue Devil great plans to major in business at Drexel.
Tough Loss to Blue Devil Lax
Shoreham-Wading River proved to be too hot for the Huntington girls' lacrosse team to handle as the Wildcats easily moved past the Blue Devils, 17-5 in a Suffolk Division II game.
SWR took a 7-1 first half lead, and was never threatened the rest of the way, outscoring Huntington in the second frame, 10-4. The Wildcat defense smothered Blue Devil stars Alexis Thompson and Hannah Burnett. Despite the pressure, Thompson had a goal and two assists and Burnett had a goal and an assist.
Huntington's Katie Reilly notched two goals and Alyssa Amorison scored once. Katia DeSimone had an assist. Anna Tesoriero stopped 10 shots in goal. Fiona Geier recorded four saves in the net.
Nice Season for Scully at Bridgeport
Shea Scully turned in a very nice season for the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team. The 2011 Huntington High School graduate played in 15 games, starting 10 of the contests. She scored 15 goals and added 10 assists. Scully took 33 shots and picked up 15 ground balls. Bridgeport finished the season with a 5-10 record.
Fiato Drives in Two
Rob Fiato collected two hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs to help the Huntington baseball team nip host Kings Park, 3-2. Blue Devil pitcher Kevin Montefusco hurled the complete game victory.
H-ton Boys' Tennis Wins Twice
The Huntington boys' tennis team improved its record in league play to 10-0 with victories over John H. Glenn and Kings Park by identical 5-2 scores. Against Glenn, the Blue Devils' Sam Johnson cruised in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Against Kings Park, Alex Castillo and Brian Marek came-from-behind to win a thrilling No. 2 doubles match, 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6 (8-6).
Burnett & Thompson Not Enough
Hannah Burnett and Alexis Thompson are two of the top high school lacrosse players in the state, but not even their sensational performances against Harborfields last week were enough to stop Huntington High School from going down to defeat in overtime, 14-13.
Huntington trailed at halftime, 8-7, but the Blue Devils rallied in the second half and took a 13-12 lead. Harborfields tied the score with about 3:30 remaining to send the game into overtime.
Burnett had five goals and three assists. Thompson tallied three goals and five assists. Emma DeGennaro and Katie Reilly each score two goals. Sarah Fernandez also scored in the game. Alyssa Amorison added three assists. Anna Tesoriero made 11 saves in goal.
Plant Notches Three Goals
Dan Plant's first college lacrosse season is now under his proverbial belt. The 2012 Huntington High School alum played in 12 games for Rutgers University this spring, starting one game and scoring three goals. Plant took 12 shots, including 10 shots on goal, picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover. The Scarlet Knights compiled a record of 2-13.
