Hannah Burnett and Alexis Thompson kicked off their final season at Huntington High School by putting on an offensive display that will go down in Blue Devil history books as one of the most impressive ever as Huntington stormed past host Sachem North, 19-4.
Burnett scored seven goals and added three assists and Thompson notched five goals and five assists to lead the Blue Devils. Katie Reilly had two goals and two assists. Alyssa Amorison picked up five assists.
Huntington built an early lead and was ahead at halftime, 11-3. The Blue Devils continued their high-powered play in the second frame, outscoring Sachem North, 8-1.
Mackenzie Maloney (two goals), Sarah Fernandez (one goal, one assist), Emma DeGennaro (one goal), Katia DeSimone (one goal) and Irina DeSimone (one assist) also contributed to the offensive explosion.
Anna Tesoriero stopped four shots in goal for the Blue Devils before Taylor Moreno came on to record one save.
Post-Season Girls' BB Awards
Four Huntington High School girls' basketball players won awards at the Suffolk County Girls' Basketball Coaches Association dinner at Villa Lombardi's in Holbrook.
Heather Forster (All-League and All-Conference), Raynisha Witherspoon (All-League) and Katie Nugent (All-League) and Katie Reilly (League V Rookie of the Year) were all honored with post-season awards.
Blue Devils Fall
The Huntington High School boys' tennis team dropped a non-league meet to perennial Suffolk power Half Hollow Hills West, 6-1. Max Fehrs picked up the Blue Devils' lone victory when he captured No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3. The meet was the season-opener for both squads. Huntington is coached by Jamie Fishlow.
Blue Devil Swimming Wraps-up
The Huntington High School boys' swimming and diving team wrapped up its season with a record of 3-5, finishing fifth in the league (149.5 points) and ninth in Suffolk (123 points). The Blue Devils were coached by Gil Smith and Meg McConnell.
Huntington was led by sophomore state champion Gunther Cassell, senior state qualifier Tom Scott, senior Todd Colvin and sophomore Daniel McCartney.
Cassell earned All-American honors after another sensational season. Scott swam in two events in the state championships and was recognized as Section XI's recipient of the NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Award. Colvin and McCartney were each named All-League.
Freshman Kevin McConnell became the first Huntington diver since 1996 to qualify for the county championships this winter. His best performance in dual meet competition of 183.82 points was good enough for third place among all Bleu Devil divers ever He is the first diver to score points in the league championships for Huntington since 2000.
Smith said the Blue Devils set six new school records this year. "The team continues to perform well in the league championships," Smith said. Blue Devil swimmers notched 90 percent of their best times in the league championships.
"We improved our dual meet season record from 2-6 last year to 3-5 this season," Smith said. "We lost close meets with Harborfields and West Islip and continued to swim well in the league championships."
HHS Boys' BB Dinner
The Huntington High School boys' basketball team celebrated another good year at a dinner for players, parents and coaches at Sal D's of Huntington Restaurant on Wall Street. "It was really nice," one parent said.
The Blue Devils reached the Section XI playoffs, where they upset Copiague and Central Islip before falling to Longwood. It was a thrilling run for the team and its fans.
Head coach Brian Carey picked up the tab at the dinner for his players, who presented members of the coaching staff with cards and small gifts.
Alum Takes 14th in NCAAs
Huntington High School alum Vernon O'Garra finished in 14th place in the NCAA Division I epee fencing championships. A Penn State University senior, O'Garra defeated 11 opponents in the NCAA championships, which were held in San Antonio, Texas.
One of the greatest Blue Devil fencers ever, O'Garra was Penn State's top finisher in men's epee.
Scully Starts Fast
Huntington High School alum Shea Scully is off to a fast start with the University of Bridgeport's women's lacrosse team. The former Blue Devil star has notched five goals and four assists over her first six college games. She has fired off 11 shots from her midfield position and picked up six ground balls. The 5'7 Scully is a 2012 Huntington graduate.
Scully's sisters Casey and Matte also played college lacrosse. Casey Scully was a four-year lacrosse star at Iona College, where she scored 103 goals and added 22 assists. Matte Scully played at Stony Brook University, graduating a full year early last spring.
Cortland Counts on Hayes-Hurley
The SUNY Cortland women's lacrosse team is counting on Emma Hayes-Hurley to have a great season and the 2012 Huntington High School alum isn't disappointing the Red Dragons.
Hayes-Hurley has helped Cortland rise in the NCAA Division III rankings to No. 3. The Red Dragons have topped a string of ranked foes, including a 9-8 victory over Ithaca last Saturday in which the former Blue Devil star scored a goal.
Hayes-Hurley transferred to Cortland this year after playing at Binghamton University as a freshman. She has scored eight goals and added an assist in her first seven games for the Red Dragons.
Hayes-Hurley scored two goals against both St. Lawrence and No. 6 College of New Jersey and also put the ball in the back of the net against No. 9 Franklin & Marshall, Union and William Smith.
