H-ton Fencers Climb on All-Time Lists

Another solid season for the Huntington High School fencing program resulted in several team members climbing higher on the Blue Devils' all-time and single season record lists.

Senior James Ferraiolo capped off five varsity seasons by moving into second place on the men's epee career win list behind Vernon O'Garra's 118 victories. Ferraiolo's 84-42 record gives him the ninth best epee winning percentage in program history. Ferraiolo's record of 32-3 this year is the fourth best epee mark ever.

Four-time letter winner Richard Hermer-Fried went 27-8 this season as a senior to improve to 57-55 over his career and earn a spot on the all-time win list. Junior James Montefusco's record of 18-12 this winter runs his career total to 32-29 over three seasons.

Senior Brent Filippini compiled a 29-13 mark this season to improve his career record to 80-59 over the past four seasons. Filippini now has the second most saber victories and the eighth best winning percentage. Senior Joseph Rizzi, a three year varsity fencer, had a record of 31-8 this year, the eighth best single season ever. His career mark of 84-37 is fifth best all-time among Huntington foil fencers.

Senior Katia DeSimone, a four-year starter in saber, concluded her career with a saber team leading 93 wins. The career winning percentage is second only to 2004 Blue Devil grad Alexandra Wheeler. "Katia has the best single season record ever in saber at 29-10 as a junior," head coach Alan Kuver said. Freshman Irina DeSimone, Katia's sister, now has 23 career wins to date and three more years of eligibility.

Senior Maggie Askerberg put her four years on the varsity to good use, compiling a 68-35 record to give her the third best foil winning percentage in school history. After a solid season, junior Brianna Kirkland's career record stands at 34-25 record with one more campaign to go. She should be joined by Sibilla Maiarelli who will return from a year abroad in Italy, and has 32 career wins herself.

Senior Caroline Glowacky completed her four seasons with Huntington owning the third best women's epee winning percentage ever with a 54-30 record. Sophomore Mary Sheehan compiled the second best sophomore record in history with an 18-9 mark. Tateana Khokhar turned in a 13-10 record to set a new standard for an eighth grader.
