Huntington School Briefs
The Huntington High School chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the national math honor society, likes to keep busy. The organization conducts math tutoring in the district and the community, assists teachers at Flower Hill and Southdown primary schools during "math nights" and raises money to fund two scholarships that are presented each spring to graduating members of the society.
The group also holds Predict-a-Run, a fundraiser that involves students predicting their time in the mile run. Prizes are awarded to the top three participants. Pi Day each March 14 (Get it? 3.14) sees the society hosting a Pi party complete with pie eating contests, along with "best tasting" and "most creative" competitions.
HHS Spring Musical
Huntington High School's spring musical is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 12-13. This year's production will be the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic, "The Sound of Music." There will be 7:30 p.m. performances each night and a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.
Michael Schwendemann, the drama club's longtime faculty advisor, said students have already demonstrated a great deal of interest in the show.
Bingo Night at Washington
A crowd of 150-200 turned out for Bingo Night at Washington Primary School last Friday. The PTA event was coordinated by Shari Harris and Michele Sabatino. Teachers Kristin Thatcher and Peri Alfano called the numbers and Principal Marsha Neville pitched in to help wherever she was needed.
"It was a great night," Mrs. Harris said. "Every child went home with a prize. Those who won more than twice were asked if they could give the second prize to someone else and they did so without hesitation."
"We had a great turn out and a good time was had by all," Mrs. Neville said.
Beneficial Relationship
Huntington High School is continuing to build a mutually beneficial relationship with MSG Varsity television network. Several Huntington video arts program students have been interviewed on air and had their short films shown on the network and made available on the MSG Varsity website.
"This is a wonderful opportunity and incentive for our talented video students," said Heather Swan, who heads Huntington's video arts program. "Now the students are able to reach a larger audience when their videos are selected and viewed on a weekly TV show. The students are feeling validated for their hard work on a whole new level."
Highsteppers Dance Clinic
Interest continues to build for the Huntington Highsteppers dance clinic on Saturday, February 9 from 1-4 p.m. at Huntington High School. The clinic is open to students in grades 3-8. The Highsteppers are the high school's competitive dance team.
Members of the Highsteppers will teach clinic participants a dance routine. A $25 registration fee includes a t-shirt. All proceeds from the clinic will be used to defray expenses associated with the upcoming Highsteppers' trip to Orlando, Florida for the national dance championships.
Checks should be made payable to Huntington Highsteppers and placed in an envelope in the PTA mailbox of the student's school along with the student's name, grade, school and emergency contact number. Registration will continue through Thursday, January 17.
On the day of the clinic, parents are invited to return at 3:30 p.m. to see what clinic participants have learned.
Next School Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Huntington School Board is scheduled for Monday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams School auditorium. The public is invited to attend. A meeting agenda and related materials will be posted on the district's website at www.hufsd.edu.
Victoria's Playground Fundraiser
The effort to erect a playground at Washington Primary School in memory of Victoria Gaines will take a step forward with a fundraiser at Neraki Greek Mediterranean Grill on Sunday, January 27 at 12:30 p.m. Tickets priced at $65 include hors d'oeuvres, desserts and refreshments. There will also be various raffles.
Ms. Gaines and two other children were killed last July 4 when the boat they were riding in capsized following a July 4 fireworks show in Oyster Bay. The youngster would have been in third grade at Washington this year.
