Huntington School Briefs

The Huntington School Board has approved a request from Joy and Kevin Treanor to establish a scholarship fund in memory of their daughter, Harlie Treanor.

Ms. Treanor passed away last summer when a boat she was riding in capsized and sank for a July 4 fireworks show. "We had just moved back to Huntington in June and Harlie had started the summer arts program," wrote the Treanor's in a letter to the district.

The Treanor's intend to fund summer arts program scholarships for two children in the maximum amount of $500 each. A June 10 fundraiser is planned with the hope the monies raised with cover two years of scholarships.

Donations Accepted by BOE

Huntington School Board members accepted a pair of "very generous" donations during their meeting this past Monday night.

The DiGiacomo family donated a HP Photosmart 7960 color printer, an Epson R1900 color printer, including seven gloss optimizers, eight toner cartridges, three packs of photo paper and a USB cable. The donation is valued at $575.

The Huntington High School student government donated $22,628.90 for use in funding the Victoria Gaines Memorial Playground at Washington Primary School. A student at the school, Ms. Gaines was one of three children to perish when a boat they were riding in capsized following a July 4 fireworks show.

HHS College Office Busy

The Huntington High School college counseling center is busier than ever this year. As of February 5, the college office had processed 1,821 college applications submitted by 241 students. (The figure does not include on-site admissions, which began last week.)

Guidance Department Director Kitty R. Klein said the college office processed 1,474 applications submitted by 229 students last year and 1,482 applications from 242 students in 2011. In 2010, 228 students submitted 1,400 college applications.

Thanks to Washington

The Tri-Community and Youth Agency and Family Service League's Manor Field Family Center thanks the Washington Primary School faculty, staff and families for participating in the Project TOY initiative. The 2012 campaign distributed 3,982 toys/gifts to needy children in the community.

Tri-CYA and the Family Service League sent a letter to the Washington School community to "express our heartfelt thanks for helping to make the 2012 Project TOY program such a success. This program is a huge undertaking and we could not have done it without your help. Thank you for putting smiles on so many faces this past holiday season."

College Advisor Sub Appointed

The Huntington School Board has appointed Erica Beggs to work as a long term substitute college advisor at Huntington High School. She will be filling in for Bernadette Walsh.

Ms. Beggs earned a BA degree in psychology at the University at Buffalo in 2005 and a master's degree in school counseling at Canisius College in 2006.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Beggs worked as an elementary school counselor in Saranac Lake and as a leave replacement counselor in Great Neck.

District officials interviewed four candidates prior to recommending Ms. Beggs for appointment.
