Burnett & Thompson Can't Be Stopped

Torrid offensive displays by seniors Hannah Burnett and Alexis Thompson have helped the Huntington High School girls' lacrosse team win four of its first five games this spring. The two teenagers are showing why they were garnered NCAA Division I scholarships.

Burnett scored the winning goal off a Thompson assist earlier this week as the Blue Devils topped East Hampton/Bridgehampton/Pierson, 15-14. Burnett notched four goals and two assists and Thompson added three goals and three assists. The duo is a potent combination and has helped Huntington jump out to its best start in recent memory.

Burnett, who is headed to the University of Florida in the fall, scored the game-winner with 2:01 remaining in the second half. The goal culminated Huntington's comeback. The Blue Devils trailed at halftime, 9-6 before outscoring East Hampton in the second half, 9-5.

Contributing to Huntington's 15 goal outburst was Katie Reilly, Sarah Fernandez and Emma DeGennaro, who all scored two goals apiece. Alyssa Amorison tallied one goal and six assists. Irina DeSimone added a goal. Blue Devil goalie Anna Tesoriero stopped seven shots. Fiona Geier recorded one save.

"The best word to describe our team is family," said Burnett, who has 27 goals and 15 assists in the first five games. "We have played really well together so far and we have started off the season really strong as a team. Even though we are young, our potential is unbelievable. We are really fast and skilled and we should continue to be successful as the season goes on."

Thompson, who has notched 17 goals and 17 assists in the first five games, is happy with the how the Blue Devils have been playing. "I think it's going very well," she said. "For once we're not a second half team and have to deal with crawling our way back. We still have a lot to work on but the rest of the season is looking good."
