Senior Liz Whitcher captured third singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to pace the Huntington High School girls' tennis team in a 6-1 victory over host Hauppauge. The win improved the Blue Devils' record to 3-1 in Suffolk League II play.
Fernandez Scores Twice
Freshman Sarah Fernandez scored two first half goals as the Huntington High School topped host Half Hollow Hills, 4-0 in a Suffolk Conference A game. The Blue Devils built an insurmountable 3-0 lead by halftime.
Gillian Ehrman and Katia DeSimone each scored one goal. DeSimone added an assist. Maggie Askerberg contributed a pair of assists. Fernandez scored her first goal about 20 minutes into the first half to break a 0-0 tie.
The victory was the first for Huntington under new head coach Kathy Wright.
Smoot is Sensational
Sensational freshman Jim Smoot notched a two-over par 37 on the front nine at Southward Ho Golf Country Club in Bay Shore to lead the Huntington High School golf team past West Islip, 7-2.
Blue Devil senior Max Fehrs also shined, shooting a four-over par 39. The victory was Huntington's second without a loss in Suffolk League III.
A private country club, Southward Ho was organized in 1923. The course was carved out of land that formerly comprised a section of the sprawling Hyde estate, which originally stretched from Great South Bay to the Long Island Railroad tracks to the north. The 18-hole golf course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast.
No Stopping Hauppauge
The Huntington girls' soccer team struggled offensively in a 3-0 loss at Hauppauge. The Blue Devils managed just two shots on goal against the powerful Eagles' defense. Huntington goalie Hannah Burnett recorded five saves in the net.
ESM Earns It
The Huntington girls' tennis team turned in a very solid effort at Eastport-South Manor, but still lost to the Sharks, 3-0. The Blue Devils displayed some great play during stretches of the contest as ESM captured three straight games, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-20.
Huntington's Scoring Challenges
After losing one of Suffolk's top goal scorers when Ricky Velasquez moved to Nassau, the Huntington boys' soccer team has found it challenging to put the ball in the net. Comsewogue visited the Blue Devils last week and walked away with a hard fought 2-0 victory. Huntington goalie Ari Moskowitz stopped nine shots.
Burnett is Splendid in Goal
Hannah Burnett was splendid in goal for Huntington, stopping 13 shots, but the Blue Devil girls' soccer team fell to host Sachem East, 3-1. All four goals in the game were scored in the first half as the teams battled to a deadlock in the second frame.
Megan Healy notched Huntington's lone goal in the contest.
