Huntington School Briefs

Huntington School Board members have approved the probationary appointment of Justine Vaughans to work as a teacher assistant at Washington Primary School. She holds a BA in communications and an MA in childhood education/special education with the two degrees being awarded by Adelphi University in 2011 and 2012, respectively. She has worked in the Huntington School District as a special education aide since July 2010.

District officials reviewed five applications and conducted two interviews prior to recommending Ms. Vaughans for the position. Her probationary period runs to October 23, 2015.

Donations Accepted by BOE

Huntington School Board members have accepted a series of donations to the district's schools. An anonymous donor contributed mums for planting in the Joan Balsari Memorial Garden at Washington Primary School. District parent and Huntington High School alumni Bill Ahern agreed to donate the services of his company, Ahern Landscaping to plant the mums.

Huntington High School drama club parents donated two Sennheiser Evolution G3 100 series wireless microphone systems for use in the drama club program at Huntington High School.

Flower Hill School parent Michele Kustera donated two iPad 2 machines for use at that school.

Trustees to Attend Annual BOCES Dinner

Several Huntington School Board members, along with Superintendent James W. Polansky are expected to attend the Western Suffolk BOCES annual board dinner on Thursday, November 29 at 7 p.m. at Wilson Tech's Dix Hills campus.

"Our staff and students are planning a wonderful evening to begin the holiday season," said Jeannette Santos, president of the Western Suffolk BOCES Board of Education. "Board members will have an opportunity to meet students from all of our participating districts as they demonstrate activities related to their BOCES programs." The presentations help members of local school boards stay up-to-date on the educational programs sponsored by BOCES.

The actual dinner that will be served will be prepared by students enrolled in Wilson Tech's culinary arts program. "We are looking forward to a relaxed environment to socialize with our colleagues from other school boards," Ms. Santos said.

HHS Freshman Class Officers

This year's freshman class at Huntington High School is led by Alexandra Berwick (president), Ekaterina Koulakova (vice president), Sam Latt (treasurer), Sophia Latt (recording secretary), Kelly Palladino (corresponding secretary) and Holly LoTurco (historian).

Teachers Erik Bruckbauer and Camille Tedeschi are the faculty advisors to the freshman class.

Teacher Mentors Appointed

Huntington School Board members appointed six veteran teachers to serve as mentors to new faculty members this year. The mentors include Kathleen Aufiero, Craig McKee, Alicia Furman, Silvia Gilbert, Soraya Triessl and Christine DePetris. Each member of the group will receive a small stipend, which will be covered by a Title IIA grant.

Teachers to Assist Director

A group of 15 dual language program teachers have been authorized by the Huntington School Board to assistant Director of Foreign Language, ESL and Bilingual Programs Carmen Kasper at parent meetings during the 2012/13 school year.

Marianna Irigoyen, Ivonne Szabo, Cinzia Reeves, Glenn Edwards, Dimaris Ortega, Rosa Lanoue, Maria Lanzot, Wendy Bonilla, Luz Marotta, Erika Sabogal, Tirsa Oliva, Wendy Gallo, Vivian Joseph, Karen Melara and Soraya Triessl were all approved to provide Ms. Kasper with assistance. They will be paid $48.97 per hour when their services are needed. A Title III grant will cover the cost of the work.
