Fall Sports Participation Up Slightly
at HHS
The fall season has seen a slight uptick in athletics participation at Huntington High School. There are 325 students participating on 17 varsity and junior varsity squads, three more than last year, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy and sent to Huntington School Board members.
The seven boys' teams have 153 participants and the 10 girls' squads are filled with 172 athletes. Remarkably, the male participation figure is identical to 2011, while the number of females playing fall sports is ever so slightly higher.
Varsity football has the largest roster with 44 players. The JV football team has 33 players. The two high school boys' soccer teams have a combined 48 players while the girls' soccer teams are filled with 44 athletes.
The varsity and junior varsity girls' tennis teams have a combined 23 players. There are 12 boys' golf team members. Girls' swimming has 24 student-athletes participating, including several from the middle school level. The team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School was eliminated three years ago for budgetary reasons.
The high school field hockey program has 41 players on the two teams' rosters. The girls' varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams are filled with 23 athletes. The varsity boys' cross country team has a roster of 14 while the girls' cross country squad has 17 runners. The JV boys' volleyball team has 12 players. (There is no boys' varsity volleyball team this year.)
With a full lineup of teams and packed rosters, space for practice and competition is tight. Several Blue Devil teams have moved off-site.
