Lauren Boyce is Proud to be a Buckeye

Lauren Boyce is on one of the biggest college campuses in America with one of the best football teams in the NCAA this fall. The Huntington High School Class of 2012 member is a freshman at Ohio State University and she is well on her way to immersing herself in life as a Buckeye.

"Everything is going very well here," said Ms. Boyce, who is majoring in speech and hearing science. "I absolutely love Ohio State and I am proud to be a Buckeye." The teenager has boundless energy and a quick wit. She's articulate, intelligent and learns new material quickly. She's also known as a loyal friend and a young woman who gets things done.

"My favorite class is linguistics, which is the scientific study behind language, its meaning, its sound and its structure," Ms. Boyce said. "It is extremely interesting and it has inspired me to declare a minor in linguistics."

The freshman, who hopes to become an audiologist, has dived head first into life on Ohio State's massive campus. "I joined the Boo Radley Society, which is a random acts of kindness club and I also joined my dorm's activities board, and have since been elected to the executive board," Ms. Boyce said.

The Boo Radley Society is new on the Ohio State campus. Its purpose to maintain a positive atmosphere everywhere the group goes, spreading smiles and performing random acts of kindness while simultaneously inspiring others to do the same.

An active member of the Mount Leadership Society, Ms. Boyce serves on the group's historian's committee. The organization "focuses on students committed to leadership and service," according to the OSU website. "Students further develop their skills by participating in a wide variety of leadership and service projects. It is an honor to be a Mount Scholar. Only 100 students are selected each year to be part of the program."

Ms. Boyce has participated in various events sponsored by the organization, including Empty Bowls, where she made glazed clay bowls that were sold along with soup. The initiative raised $2,580 for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

The Huntington alum has made dream catchers and dream catcher kits for the children at Nationwide Children's Hospital, painted pots and potted plants for residents at a nearby nursing home and volunteered at the Fall Harvest Jamboree, which is the city of Columbus' alternate option for kids instead of trick-or-treating in an unsafe neighborhood. Ms. Boyce has even made dog treats for the local animal shelter.

As if she doesn't already have a full plate to keep her occupied, Ms. Boyce is a member of Ohio State's novice varsity crew team, which allows her to learn how to row while working toward becoming a full-fledged NCAA Division I athlete. "I am also getting involved through the crew team," she said. "We are preparing to participate in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides walk with the Buckeye crew team this weekend."
