Mozer Earns Spirit of
Community Award

Analise Mozer is a really special young woman. The J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grader has an enormous amount of energy and desire to perform good deeds. She recently earned the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her volunteer work on behalf of the research into finding a cure for juvenile diabetes.

Ms. Mozer has been tireless in her efforts to raise money to fight diabetes and promote awareness of the disease. The scourge of Type I diabetes has hit home for the Finley student. As a seventh grader she felt a need to do more to get involved in the battle to find a cure. She developed an Awareness Week at the school, enlisting the help of her friends. The Diabetes Divas, as the group dubbed itself, designed bracelets, created posters and read morning announcements educating students and staff about diabetes and how people live with it day-to-day.

Ms. Mozer and The Diabetes Divas have been featured on the Verizon FIOS cable network and are well known to Long Island Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation officials. The teenager is viewed around the school as a real dynamo and relentless advocate for diabetes research.

Finley Principal John Amato and guidance counselor Caterina Cain nominated Ms. Mozer for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award last November. "After several months, word came that Analise was a New York State finalist," Mrs. Cain said.

Lenox Bell of Prudential came to Finley last week to present a coveted award medal to Ms. Mozer as her parents looked on. "I know the Huntington community takes great pride in Analise's accomplishments," Mrs. Cain said.
