Three Teenagers Not Afraid of a Challenge

Huntington High School is filled with academically talented students. These teenagers win their share of awards, but many achievements go relatively unnoticed, except for the occasional public recognition or honor society induction.

Three such students are freshmen Charles Beers, Justin Loturco and Mary Sheehan. The trio is enrolled in foreign language teacher Ingrid Moreira's ninth grade Spanish class. "They have worked very hard throughout the year to improve their knowledge of Spanish. They are a pleasure to have in class."

Messrs. Beers and Loturco and Ms. Sheehan aren't afraid of a challenge. They recently took the National Spanish Exam, a demanding test that requires a high level of proficiency. "Their scores on quizzes and tests are always very high," Mrs. Moreira said. "They come to class on time, do their homework and always participate."

Studying a foreign language can be a difficult endeavor for any student. It requires intense classroom attention and plenty of at-home work. But, Messrs. Beers and Luturco and Ms. Sheehan have been outstanding at mastering a second language.

"They love to communicate in Spanish and are highly motivated to keep learning," Mrs. Moreira said about the trio. "They are not only high achievers, but also respectful and kind young people."

Mrs. Moreira has recommended the three students for Spanish Level III Honors next year. The teacher said she is "certain that their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to the Spanish language and culture will continue."
