Mick Luckow Scholarship is Established

Mick Luckow crammed a lot of living in his 44 years. The married father of three was a fixture in the Huntington community when he passed away suddenly on Father's Day, June 20, 2010. He was just 44 years old. Now his family has created a scholarship in his memory to benefit a Huntington High School senior who possesses the same qualities this remarkable man displayed during his all too short life.

"Michael was more than a loving husband and devoted father, he was a man who loved to give back to his community," said Carolyn Luckow, referring to her husband by his formal first name. "He coached all of our children's sports teams. His memory deserves to be remembered and honored and I know he would want it remembered this way."

In the aftermath of Mr. Luckow's tragic passing, the Huntington Sports League and the Huntington Village Lacrosse Club both held fundraising events to help the Luckow family. Mr. Luckow's three sons, Hunter, Luke and Shane are all enrolled in the Huntington School District.

During its May 7 meeting, the Huntington School Board approved the establishment of the new scholarship fund, which is being created by the Luckow family. "I would like to have the students write me a letter telling me why they feel they are deserving of this scholarship," Mrs. Luckow said. "We are looking for an individual male or female with integrity and honesty and who is hardworking with a goal in life to honor family and make a difference in their community."

Michael Robert Luckow was an executive with Met Life in Garden City. He loss was devastating to the community. A funeral mass was offered at St. Patrick's Church on Main Street in Huntington. Internment followed at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

The Mick Luckow Scholarship intends to grant a $5,000 award to a future Huntington High School graduating senior "to be used towards furthering their education with the hope that they can then have more opportunities in their future to become a success in whatever profession they choose," Mrs. Luckow wrote in a letter to the district concerning the establishment of the scholarship fund.

"To know my husband was to love him," Mrs. Luckow said. "Just ask anyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing him."
