Retired Reading Teacher Passes Away

Retired Huntington School District reading teacher Patricia E. Naughton passed away on Friday, May 11. She was 68.

Ms. Naughton came to Huntington in September 1965 and stayed for 38 years. She was a third grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School through June 1972. She then became a Jefferson reading teacher through June 1995. She later worked as a reading teacher at Southdown (September 1995 to June 2000) and Woodhull (September 2000 to June 2003) Schools.

A 1965 graduate of SUNY College at New Paltz, Ms. Naughton earned a master's degree in reading at Hofstra University in 1972. She retired from the Huntington School District at the end of June 2003.

"Patty was a terrific reading specialist," said Maryann Daly, the district's SEARCH chairperson-teacher. She was a dynamic educator known for her huge smile. The longtime faculty member was regarded as extremely knowledgeable about reading.

For many years, Ms. Naughton served as an adjunct professor at LIU-C.W. Post College and Dowling College. "She was such a great person and will be sorely missed," said retired Huntington teacher Elaine Lynch in an e-mail to friends and former colleagues. Ms. Lynch and Ms. Naughton collaborated closely for many years and held each other in high esteem.

Friends paid their respects at Brueggemann Funeral Home on Tuesday. A funeral Mass was offered on Wednesday at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport with internment following at St. Charles Cemetery.
