Huntington Alum Wins LI Marathon
Lindsey Block wasn't a track star at Huntington High School, where she was a member of the Class of 2004. In fact, the 2012 Long Island Marathon women's champion wasn't even on the Blue Devil track and field team. But, she's an elite runner now and displayed remarkable determination last Sunday.
Ms. Block, who still lives in Huntington, is a teacher assistant at James H. Vernon School in Oyster Bay. She initially went to college at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, but returned to Long Island to finish her degree in education at Long Island University-C.W. Post College.
At Huntington High School, Ms. Block was a member of the National Honor Society and played on the field hockey and softball teams. She earned the Most Improved Athlete Award in softball. "No running," she said earlier this week about her high school activities. "I used to hate running, believe it or not." She now trains with the Bellmore Striders running team.
The 25-year old covered the 26.2 mile marathon course last weekend in 3 hours and 41 seconds. Ms. Block doesn't know exactly why she runs, but pointed to its mental benefits. She runs every day. This year's race marked her second attempt at running a marathon.
In the 2004 edition of The Huntingtonian, the Huntington High School yearbook, Ms. Block's senior quote consisted of a line from the Dave Matthews Band song, Two Step: "Celebrate we will because life is short, but sweet for certain."
