Food Drive Set for May 15 at
Budget Vote

With the stocks of local food pantries continuing to run dangerously low, Huntington School District teachers have organized a food drive that will culminate on May 15 at Huntington High School as residents go to the polls to vote on the proposed school budget and capital reserve fund proposition and to elect three trustees.
Teachers are setting up a table near the high school lobby on the day of balloting for community members to drop off non-perishable items during a three-hour period from 3-6 p.m. The food will be picked up that same day by the Helping Hand Rescue Mission. The items will immediately be earmarked for local folks and families who are going hungry.
Faculty members have been collecting goods among themselves for days. "We encourage all community members to join us and help those in need," said Georganne White, librarian at Washington/Jefferson primary schools.
Lead teachers for the drive have been put in place in each of the district's seven buildings and boxes have started to fill up with canned and other goods. Participants in the food collection on May 15 will be given a free raffle chance for a "family fun basket."
Teachers from across the district will man the collection table in shifts during the three-hour period. "It's a very worthy cause," Ms. White said. "We hope this effort will help families going through a difficult time."
