Three Huntington BOE Seats up for Grabs in May
Three seats on the Huntington School Board will be up for grabs on May 15 when district residents go to the polls. Winning candidates will serve three-year terms commencing July 1 and running through June 30, 2015.
The seats currently held by Huntington School Board President Emily Rogan and trustees Kimberly Brown and Elizabeth Black will be contested this year.
Residents interested in running for one of the seats can secure nominating petitions from District Clerk Elizabeth Troffa in the central administration wing of Jack Abrams School during regular business hours. Petitions must be signed by a minimum of 83 "qualified" district voters. A person need not be a registered voter to sign the petition.
According to Education Law (Section 2012), a "qualified" voter is a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the election at which he or she seeks to vote.
Candidate petitions must be returned to the District Clerk's Office no later than Monday, April 16 at 5 p.m.
A drawing of lots to determine the candidate's name placement on the ballot will be held on Tuesday, April 17 at 9 a.m. in the District Clerk's Office.
In accordance with State Education Law and Public Officers Law, Huntington School Board members must meet the following qualifications:
• A citizen of the United States.
• Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
• Able to read and write.
• A legal resident one year prior to the election.
• Cannot be an employee of the Huntington Union Free School District.
• The only member of his/her family (that is, cannot be a member of the same household) on the Huntington Union Free School District Board.
• May not simultaneously hold another, incompatible public office.
• Must not have been removed from a school district office within one year preceding the date of election to the Board.
