Former Huntington Blue Devil wrestler Ryan Fox completed a stellar sophomore season by finishing third at 165 lbs. in the National Junior College Athletic Assn. Wrestling Championships in Rochester, Minnesota to claim All-American honors.

Fox competed for Nassau Community College, which won the team title in the non-scholarship division of the tournament. As a Blue Devil senior, Fox finished third in the Section XI tournament, compiling a 37-2 record for the year.

Fox's only loss in the junior college national tournament came at the hands of national champion Ethan Orr of Labette Community College in Kansas, which captured the overall national team crown. Orr topped Fox with an exciting 8-4 decision. Fox then claimed third place by winning four straight matches, including a 14-2 major decision of Bryce Lewis of Colby Community College in Kansas.

A 2010 Huntington High School graduate, Fox has already committed to Binghamton University for the 2012/13 season.

New Blue Devil Records

Huntington High School seniors Trayvon Toney and Tyriek Johnson both recently set new indoor Blue Devil records. Toney shattered Jovan Hairston's 2003 shot put record of 49'9.5 with a toss measured at 49'10.5. Johnson broke his own mark of 7.53 seconds in the 55m high hurdles by clocking out at 7.51 seconds.

Booster Club Buys Wrestling Mat

The Huntington Booster Club is continuing to generously support the Blue Devil athletic program. The boosters recently agreed to fund the purchase of a new wrestling mat. The club donated $7,100 for what is essentially a brand new mat, It was used only at this year's Section XI championship. The county tournament is a two-day competition.

In recent years, the Huntington Booster Club has donated $165,000 in goods and services to the district.

Finley Girls' Lax Coaches

Marissa Bergmann will serve as the head coach of J. Taylor Finley Middle School's "blue" girls' lacrosse team this spring and Katelyn Hirsch will be the assistant coach.

Linda Roth will be the head coach of Finley's "white" team with Kailene Abt as the assistant coach. Ms. Abt was an All-American for the Huntington High School lax team during her scholastic career. She went on to earn four varsity letters at Notre Dame.

Matte Scully on Field for SBU

Huntington High School 2009 alum Matte Scully was on the field last Saturday for Stony Brook University when the Seawolves topped nationally ranked Johns Hopkins, 15-14. The victory gives SBU a perfect 5-0 record this spring.

The 5'7 Scully plays attack for the Seawolves. She scored three goals for Stony Brook last year as a sophomore. At Huntington she was a starter on the Blue Devil soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. Her older sister, Casey is a senior on the Iona College lacrosse team while her youngster sister, Shea is a freshman on the lax team at the University of Bridgeport.

Ms. Scully served as the Class of 2009 president and was class treasurer her junior year. She captained all three Blue Devil teams she played on as a senior.

Sarah Ehrman, a member of Huntington's Class of 2011 is also a member of the Stony Brook University woman's lacrosse team.

Finley Boys' Lax Coaches

Joseph Roy has been appointed as the head coach of the J. Taylor Finley Middle School "blue" boys' lacrosse team. Vincent Tannazzo will be the head coach of Finley's "white" team. Matt Perlongo will be the "white" team's assistant coach and Leyland Davis will be the "blue" team's assistant coach.

Kocis Ready for Action

Karly Kocis is ready for action as the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team opens the season at Niagara University this week. A member of Huntington High School's Classof 2010, the 5'6 Kocis is the Bonnies goalie.

Last year, the Blue Devil alum enjoyed a great freshman season. She appeared in all 15 St. Bonaventure games, starting 14 of them. Kocis was selected for the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie team. She recorded 124 saves, including nine in the season-opener at Bucknell. Her first career college victory in the net came on March 29 at Niagara.

As a Huntington senior, Kocis compiled 136 saves and 98 completed clears. She had 326 saves as a junior and 173 completed clears. She also played tennis, basketball and ice hockey over the course of high school.

Kocis is majoring in sports studies at St. Bonaventure.

Coaching Appointments Approved

Huntington School Board members approved spring coaching appointments for Keith Flynn (JV baseball), Keith Barrett (varsity baseball), Jennifer Fudens (varsity girls' track and field), Kevin Thorbourne (varsity assistant girls' track and field) and James Byrnes (JV softball).

Flynn was originally appointed as the varsity assistant baseball coach and Barrett had earlier been approved as the JV baseball coach. The staff was reorganized last week.
