Trustees Grant Tenure to Faculty

Huntington School Board members granted tenure to one administrator and six teachers during their Monday night meeting. The session was preceded by a reception in the Jack Abrams School rotunda in honor of members of the group.
Teachers approved for tenure appointments included Gene Acevedo (social studies) Rebecca Arlin (special education), Katherine Canales (music), Miriam Engle (elementary classroom/bilingual extension), Melissa Jasinski (social studies) and Veronica Mainville (music). Dr. Kenneth A Card, Jr., assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction was also granted tenure in his position.
Superintendent James W. Polansky offered his congratulations to the group in brief remarks during the reception. "This is a difficult time in the field – a time where money is short and educators are seemingly under constant scrutiny," Mr. Polansky said during the tenure reception. "The next several years are not likely to be easy, but I am confident that our tenure candidates will remain committed to their students, to the profession, and to the Huntington School District. We are placing great faith in their abilities, work ethic and dedication."
New York State Education Law requires teachers and administrators to serve a three year probationary period before being eligible to receive a tenure appointment. During this time faculty members are subjected to intensive observation and evaluation and can be dismissed for virtually any reason. (Faculty members who have previously received tenure in New York State are required to serve only a two year probationary period.)
