The Huntington High School boys' swimming and diving team has qualified two swimmers for the New York State Championships on March 2-3 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.

Blue Devil freshman Gunther Cassell and senior Jake Goldstein have both qualified for the state finals after meeting the time requirements in their respective events. Goldstein is headed to Yale University next fall where he intends to continue his swimming career.

Forster Red Hot in Loss

Heather Forster scored 18 points, but the Huntington High School girls' basketball team fell to Bellport, 58-48. The Blue Devils kept pace through the three quarters, trailing 10-7 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. Huntington cut its deficit to just two points by the start of the final frame at 34-32.

The Clippers won the game by going on a 24-16 run over the final eight minutes. Katie Nugent had eight points for the Blue Devils and Tara Byrnes added six points.

Bellport Tops Huntington on Hard Court

The Huntington High School boys' basketball team looked great in the first half, building a 36-37 halftime lead at home against Bellport. Then the Clippers rallied, going on a 29-13 third quarter tear and outscoring the Blue Devils in the second half, 48-28 en route to a 75-64 victory.

Huntington junior Kiernan McGovern connected for 19 points and junior Patrick Reilly added 13 points. Seniors Jack Forster and Ty Herion each scored eight points.

Fencing Victories for Huntington

Huntington sophomore James Montefusco helped lead the Huntington boys' fencing team over Newfield, 16-11. The Blue Devils locked up the victory when Montefusco won his second bout in epee.

Eighth grader Irina DeSimone was magnificent in saber, winning three bouts and securing the Huntington girls' fencing team's 20-7 victory over Newfield.

A Long Afternoon

It was a long afternoon for the Huntington girls' basketball team last Saturday in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium as undefeated Hauppauge rolled over the Blue Devils, 62-31 before a crowd of about 100 fans.

The Eagles took an early 18-8 lead before opening an insurmountable 27 point halftime advantage by going on a 19-2 second quarter run.

Heather Forster's 11 points led Huntington. Ellen Byrnes added six points.

Tough Losses for Fencers

The Huntington boys' and girls' fencing teams suffered tough losses at home to Half Hollow Hills. The Blue Devil boys' were nipped 14-13 while the girls' dropped a 20-7 verdict.

Jamison Earns MOW Award

Huntington's Corey Jamison topped Amsterdam's Brandon Lapi, 2-1, in the Big Ten Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Albany last Saturday night to win the 113 lb. weight class and earn the Most Outstanding Wrestling Award for the lightweight classes.

Lapi placed third in the New York State Division I tournament last winter, making Jamison's victory all that much more impressive. Huntington's Brandon Mendez outlasted Averill Park's Gary Goodermote in overtime, 4-2 to win the 126 lb. title. Blue Devil heavyweight Anthony Puca edged Amsterdam's Chris Rodriquez in the 285 lb. final, 4-2.

New Rochelle's Tyler Lilly captured a 4-2 decision over Huntington's Nick Lupi in the 220 lb. final. Kevin Mendez (3rd at 132 lbs.) and Carlos Pereira (4th at 120 lbs.) also placed in the competition for the Blue Devils.

Huntington finished fifth in the team standings with 153.5 points. New Rochelle won the tournament with 186 points.
