The Huntington High School boys' basketball team utilized an explosive third quarter to coast past visiting Hauppauge, 63-49 behind John McCarthy's 16 points and Jack Forster's 13 rebounds.
Huntington opened a 16-10 first quarter lead and held a 28-25 halftime advantage before going on a 22-5 third quarter run to effectively put the game on ice.
Forster added seven points. Devon Nelson, Ty Herion and David Casey each scored six points, respectively. Trevor Bryant dropped five points. Patrick Reilly and John Vanderschuyt contributed four points apiece. Kenny McCarthy, Connor Birchard and Derrick Sherrod added three points each, respectively.
Wrestlers Finish in 11th Place
The Huntington wrestling team finished in 11th place out of 12 teams in the Ted Peterson Tournament at Island Trees High School last Saturday. The Blue Devils scored 51.5 points. Wantagh won the competition, scoring 374 points. No Huntington wrestler reached the finals.
Offense Continues to Struggle
The Huntington girls' basketball team is struggling offensively. The Blue Devils dropped a league game at Hauppauge, 54-38 as the team scored just 17 points in the entire first half.
The Eagles led 28-17 at halftime and expanded their advantage to 45-25 after three quarters. Raynisha Witherspoon led all Huntington scorers with 10 points. Katie Nugent and Tara Byrnes added eight points each, respectively.
Blue Devils Compete in Hispanic Games
Huntington winter track star Tyriek Johnson ran a personal best 7.53 seconds in the 55m hurdles, besting his own school mark of 7.63 set last year and went on to place third in a field of 111 athletes from more than 100 high schools at the Hispanic Games at the Armory in Manhattan last Saturday.
Johnson was edged in the finals by runners from Maryland and Pennsylvania, but he managed to upend the top seed from New York during the competition. Johnson also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet and regained the top seed in Suffolk. The event drew 79 competitors.
In the mile run, seniors Ryan Ackerman and Mike Garing ran personal bests as Ackerman finished in 4:44.12 and Garing in 4:55. Freshman Matteo McNeil threw a personal best of 39'1 in the shot put.
Blue Devil Wrestlers Fall
Islip pinned the Huntington wrestling team last week, 58-15 at Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. John Arceri (8-4), Corey Jamison (pin 0:14) and Anthony Puca (forfeit) were the lone wrestlers to win matches for the Blue Devils.
Early Lead Slips Away
The Huntington boys' basketball team jumped out to an 18-14 first quarter lead at Copiague before the Eagles went on a 22-12 run that gave them a 36-30 halftime lead.
The Blue Devils attempted a comeback but it fell short as Copiague outscored Huntington in the second half, 39-35. Junior Patrick Reilly's 19 points led the Blue Devils. Sophomore Trevor Bryant added 12 points. Junior Devon Nelson and senior John McCarthy scored 11 points each, respectively. Junior Kiernan McGovern dropped in eight points.
Jamison Wins for Blue Devils
Corey Jamison pinned his opponent in 1:53 of the first period but the Kings Park wrestling team topped Huntington last Friday afternoon, 58-12. Joseph Puca (11-4 at 138 lbs.) and Anthony Puca (3-2 at 285 lbs.) earned decisions to round out the Blue Devil scoring.
